American Pharoah After the Triple Crown - Back to the Track or Straight to the Breeders?

The horse racing world is buzzing after American Pharoah's Belmont Stakes win made him the first horse in 37 years to secure the Triple Crown. But while fans were obviously hugely excited for the win, almost as soon as American Pharoah was off the track, people started asking - what's next? Where will he go from here?

The Rest of 2015

The owners seem pretty clear on their ultimate aim for 2015, to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland in October, and complete what has just been deemed the Horse Racing Grand Slam of the three Triple Crown Races plus the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Possible races on the way there include the Haskell Invitational (Aug 2, Monmouth, NJ) or the Jim Dandy Stakes (Aug 1, Saratoga, NY) and then the Travers Stakes (Aug 29, Saratoga, NY).

The Decision At End of 2015

It's a paradoxical outcome in horse racing and horse race betting, but it's true - the winners are usually retired early. The reason for this is that their value in the breeding shed almost always exceeds their potential earnings on the racetrack – and with a lot less danger of something going wrong.

As a Triple Crown winner, American Pharoah stands to charge a stud fee of up to $100,000 per cover and he could cover 100s of mares - in a perfect world, that could earn him $15 million in the breeding shed. That said, this isn't a perfect world - that money is entirely dependent on his fertility and his willingness to breed to that many mares. Although it's a huge potential sum, there's plenty of potential for it to not materialize.

On the horse racing track, Pharoah could easily earn $6 million at the Dubai World Cup in March and maybe another $5 million at a second Breeder's Cup Classic at his hometrack Santa Anita in November 2016. .
