A 37-year drought came to an end on Saturday when American Pharoah wired the 147th running of the Belmont S. (G1) under jockey Victor Espinoza for owner/breeder Zayat Stables and trainer Bob Baffert.
Sent off the heavy 3-4 favorite, the bay colt was never challenged at any point with Espinoza sitting chilly into the final turn. Frosted (Tapit) ranged up to his outside entering the stretch and American Pharoah finally began running.
Moving smoothly over the fast dirt at Belmont Park, the sophomore drew off to finish 1 ½ miles in 2:26.65 as the sell-out crowd roared in approval.
Having already captured the Kentucky Derby (G1) on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs, and romping in the slop at Pimlico to score the Preakness S. (G1) by seven lengths, American Pharoah became the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 with his Belmont Stakes triumph.
