American Pharoah drills 5f in :59.20

Triple Crown hero American Pharoah posted a five-furlong move on Sunday over the fast main track at Santa Anita Park.

The Bob Baffert trainee was caught in :59.20, which ranked as the second fastest of 57 moves at that distance on the day.

This was American Pharoah’s third work since romping in the Belmont S. (G1) on June 6 by 5 1/2 lengths and becoming the first horse in 37 years to sweep the Triple Crown.

Baffert has gradually increased the work distance for the bay sophomore. In his first move back on June 29, American Pharoah covered three furlongs in :36.40 before going a half-mile in :47.60 last Monday on July 6.

The Zayat Stables colorbearer is scheduled to ship to Del Mar, where he will continue preparations for his next start in the $1 million Haskell Invitational (G1) on August 2 at Monmouth Park.
