Astra Stakes exotics and field analysis for Santa Anita Jan. 21

A field of nine fillies and mares four years old and up will travel 1 1/2 miles over the Camino Real Turf Course in the $100,000 Astra S. at Santa Anita on Saturday.

#1 WARRENS CANDY GIRL (6-1): Finishing with a 91 Brisnet Speed rating last out when fifth against tougher in the 1 1/8-mile Robert J. Frankel (G3), the five-year-old mare comes in with the highest last race speed rating among the field and will stretch out to 1 1/2 miles for the first time for trainer Craig Lewis, a 26% winner in non-graded stakes. The closer posted a 97 Late Pace rating in her most recent outing, a trip that was compromised by a slow pace, and may improve with the added distance.

#2 LADY CLEMENTINE (5-1): The four-year-old closer has two victories since shipping to the U.S. and stretched out to 1 1/4 miles last out in the American Oaks (G1), in which she weakened to finish ninth of 11. The filly will drop in class here for George Papaprodromou, just a 3% winner in non-graded stakes, and will get Flavien Prat, a 23% winner on turf but only an 8% winner at Santa Anita this meet. She won two back in a 1 1/8-mile allowance/optional claimer at Del Mar but is 0-for-2 for at this track.

#3 QUEEN OFTHE TEMPLE (3-1): The Temple City five-year-old was third by 4 1/2 lengths in the 1 3/8-mile Red Carpet (G3) at Del Mar in late November after finishing a distant sixth in the Rodeo Drive (G1) at Santa Anita. Some class relief should help the mare improve for trainer Dan Blacker, a 25% winner in non-graded stakes, while the addition of Juan Hernandez is a plus. The jockey is a 30% winner this meet and a 20% winner on turf. Queen Ofthe Temple is the only runner in today's field who has attempted today's distance, from which she finished third by four lengths in the Santa Barbara (G3) at this track last May.

#4 DUVET DAY (6-1): The four-year-old came home seven lengths back in eighth in the American Oaks and was nearly eight lengths back in sixth in the Red Carpet. The Mike McCarthy pupil has not finished better than third in her last four, and she’s 0-for-4 at Santa Anita. She’ll keep jockey Kazushi Kimura, who’s just a 6% winner this meet.

#5 AUSTRALIA MIA (5-2): Making her U.S. debut, Australia Mia is the second of two McCarthy runners in the field and will get her first start in more than six months since finishing a length in second in a Group 3 in Chile. A two-time winner at Group 2 level, the Street Sense mare was 6-for-7 in 2022 while running between one and 1 1/4 miles on turf. Frankie Dettori will pick up the mount and is winning at a 16% rate at Santa Anita, but McCarthy is just a 7% winner with horses shipping to the U.S.

#6 ALMOST A FACTOR (15-1): The six-year-old was not much of a factor last season, finishing 0-for-6 with one third-place finish while racing at Del Mar and Santa Anita. She came home sixth last out in an allowance at this track, about three lengths behind third-place finisher Barrister's Ride, who re-opposes here. She posted a sharp four-furlong workout ahead of this event but her Speed figures rank poorly compared to the rest of the field.

#7 TIZ AN EDVENTURE (6-1): The five-year-old will make her first start at Santa Anita after racing her entire career at Golden Gate. The Jack Steiner pupil won her last two when racing a mile on turf and 1 1/16 miles on all-weather when winning the Miss America S. Her only loss in seven starts since joining Steiner's barn was a fourth-place finish in the 1 1/16-mile Golden Gate Fields Turf Distaff three back. For her Santa Anita debut, she'll get jockey Mike Smith, a 29% winner this meet who is 3-for-3 over the last seven days.

#8 BARRISTER'S RIDE (12-1): The four-year-old filly placed in her last two at 1 1/8 miles while under Ricardo Gonzalez, a 12% winner on turf. Two back, she finished 2 1/2 lengths behind today's race rival Lady Clementine when stalking from the inside to the far turn and getting outkicked for place. Trainer Carla Gaines is just an 11% winner this meet but a 21% winner in her last 34 non-graded stakes. Barrister's Ride boasts an 8-2-2-1 record at Santa Anita and an 11-2-2-3 record on turf.

#9 NEW HEAT (20-1): The longshot finished eighth in her last two by a combined 14 lengths while racing between 1 1/16 miles and 1 1/8 miles. Trainer Anthony Saavedra is just a 7% winner on turf, and jockey Abel Cedillo has won just 7% of his last 326 rides on the grass.
