Attention focuses on future Maryland Sired star

September 24th, 2019

Among the bevy of Maryland Sire Stakes eliminations and overnight races that followed on Sunday evening at Rosecroft Raceway, clearly the most impressive performance among the 21 winners that day was delivered by a freshman trotting colt who is among the sport's genuine budding stars.

In the penultimate early, non-betting event on Sunday at Rosecroft, Yall Beneath Me (Russell Foster) absolutely cruised to a 12-length victory in the second round of Maryland Sire Stakes eliminations for two0-year-old trotting colts and geldings and obliterated the track record - coincidentally the one he set the week before - when he stopped the timer in 1:54.4 to remain unbeaten in six career starts.

A juvenile son of Googoo Gaagaa owned, bred and trained by Richard Hans, Yall Beneath Me has not only won all six of his starts en route to banking $60,000, he has captured them by an average of 19 lengths and conjured up memories of his talented sire and another local legend from decades earlier, SJ's Photo. While SJ's Photo was occasionally quirky and known to gallop, Yall Beneath Me has stayed flat in all of his starts and looms the 1-20 favorite for his $70,000 MDSS final this Sunday at Rosecroft.

Not only was Yall Beneath Me three seconds faster than Andy American, who won the earlier split in 1:58, he also posted faster clockings than both MDSS elims for freshman filly pacers. Away alertly from the rail, which is not always the ideal starting spot on a five-eighths mile track, Yall Beneath Me coasted through fractions of 28, 57.2 and 1:25.2 before coasting under the wire in 1:54.4.

While Yall Beneath Me was clearly the star of the early events, his performance was not the only bright spot. In the first MDSS elim for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings, stablemates Jordons All In (John Wagner) and Nvrfearlloydishere (Eddie Davis, Jr.) were nearly inseparable at the wire while stopping the timer in 1:52.1. Jordons All In notched his second win in seven starts and Nvrfearlloydishere suffered just his second setback from six tries. Both juveniles trained by Arlene Cameron for owner Pamela Wagner will be tough to topple in their respective $70,000 MDSS final this Sunday.

In the bevy of overnight races on the undercard, Allie's Finale (Roger Plante, Jr.) exited the Maryland Open and rallied from just off the pace second over to prevail in 1:50.4 in a non-winners of $6,000 last four starts class for older pacers. The four-year-old Allie's Western gelding trained by Steve LeBlanc was among the top horses in the MDSS events at ages two and three and now owns 18 wins and over $162,000 banked from 56 career outings and likely earned a berth in the Maryland Open next weekend.

Then several races later in the $12,000 Maryland Ooen, Diamondkeeper (Wagner) overcame an extended first over bid to wear down Bettorever (Tony Morgan) on the far turn then outlasted the late surge of 25-1 shot JW Renegade for a length victory in 1:51.3. A durable eight-year-old Pine Valley gelding owned and trained by basil Sapienza, Diamondkeeper has been horse of the meet at both Rosecroft and Ocean Downs in his career and notched his 41st victory and pushed his lifetime earnings toward $375,000 with a gritty triumph on Sunday night.
