Australia Spot Plays for Rosehill Gardens March 31

Racing in metropolitan Sydney continues midweek at Rosehill Gardens, but with the course potentially deeper than what was seen this past weekend. At this writing, the condition was listed as "Heavy 8." Here are a couple horses we'll have our eye on for the card that begins at 10:20 p.m. (EDT) Tuesday evening U.S. time.

Race 2 (11:00 p.m. EDT)

This contentious maiden affair over 6 1/2 furlongs includes both experienced runners as well as several intriguing first-time starters. #4 DUTY (9-1), co-owned by Coolmore, has had a mostly start-and-stop career but is finally piecing two starts together for the first time. A rough-trip fourth at Kembla Grange in his first start of 2020, he rebounded with a strong run over the same track Mar. 21, leading for all but the final yards over quick ground. Seemingly headed in the right direction.

Race 3 (11:35 p.m. EDT)

#6 MOCAMBO (7-1) is another exiting a run at Kembla Grange, in his case a first-up sixth following a spell dating to early October. His main selling point is that he's run very well second up previously, with a win and a second. Won earlier in his career on the metropolitan circuit (Warwick Farm) over 7 furlongs, and his off-the-pace style might be ideal in the expected testing conditions.

AUSTRALIAN “B” – ROSEHILL, RACE 1

NO.12 SELBUROSE (5-1)

Jockey: JAMES MCDONALD

Think this well bred filly, having her first start for champion trainer Chris Waller, might have good dose of ability from what we’ve seen at the trials, and I expect her to be ready to win on debut here and then potentially be tested in stakes company fairly quickly. Star jockey James McDonald takes the mount, she’s drawn perfectly in barrier 4, and I’m not convinced there’s too much depth in this field. She looks a ready made runner – in all three of her trials she jumped well, took a forward position and extended nicely when asked. In her latest effort, I’m positive she wasn’t comfortable on the synthetic surface, yet she was still able to go away from her stablemate Achiever late, who also happens to be having his first start here too. Get the feeling she’s pretty smart and she gets her career started with a bang.
