Australian Harness Racing: Redcliffe rocks

Australian harness racing is on target at BetAmerica tonight, April 22, at 11 p.m ET, which is Thursday afternoon, April 23, at Redcliffe Harness Racing Club in Queensland.

Here is our analysis for the nine-race card.

Race 1

Owner/trainer Kevin Joiner has pacer #1 Robinmegood in a perfect spot on the rail to continue hitting the board at a strong clip. 

Robinmegood is a son of Little Brown Jug winner Mr. Feelgood, who went on to breed successfully Down Under. The gelding gets a softer field, is coming off a troubled trip on the outside, and should step up to this easily.

Race 2

Sophomore pacers only for this event, where another Mr Feelgood progeny, #2 Toanui Spirit, should attract the wagering majority.

Most interesting, however, is the lightly raced #4 Arkady. The daughter of Pet Rock, a sturdy sire with a decent earning progeny, will take on her fourth race and is still looking for a spot on the board.

She is not as fresh as another Pet Rock gal, #7 Chili Rocks, but that one has only been out once and needs some schooling. Arkady is inside, just behind the obvious favorite, and could suck along for a good-priced win.

Race 3

A field of 3-year-olds and older will pace for the purse here. The oldest, #3 Wecanonlyhope, has the most experience on her résumé, but may be too obvious with those stats.

Melissa Kendall’s #8 Traces Of Tara should offer more value, because of her post, and still has more chance to win than her odds reflect. She is a daughter of Meadowlands Pace winner Artistic Fella, who rarely receives the respect he deserves for a few mighty seasons in the United States.

Race 4

#3 Mister Decorum appears to have all the details needed to rile this bunch from start to finish. The Mach Three 6-year-old has finished first or second in most contests, and this non-winners category puts him in a great condition for a score.

Race 5

Peter Greig’s #1 Ima Beach Babe just did well after shipping to Redcliffe and has been showing sparks of speed that should count in this field. The price may not be chunky, but it may still equate to value, considering the competition.

Race 6

This field needs to deal with the up-and-coming #1 Bombadier Jujon. Grant Dixon trains the pacing filly, who is lightly raced but shows she could be way better than the lurking veterans involved to her right.

She should be engaged late by #7 Allstar Sea, the older gelding who moves just late enough to pick up some place pounds.

Race 7

In this tight affair, #4 Saint Kilda Beach comes from Albion Park with worthy credentials. Her sire is a Little Brown Jug champion — the horse who defeated the huge favorite Western Hanover — and that is only a plus for this 4-year-old mare from the Grant Dixon barn.

Speed could be the key to this race, and although she has come up short here and there, she scores in the top two with fury more than half the time.

Race 8

The 5-year-old #3 Ifoundthebeach has aged with grace. She fits into this non-winners condition for Graham Dwyer and should offer a good price and give a strong performance from start to finish.

She has a shot to wire this field, which should feature older pacers coming at her late — hopefully too late.

Race 9

Closing the program is one of the cheaper contests, which makes for a tight field of recently non-productive pacers.

If it is as simple as it looks, the crowd will adore New Zealand-bred #1 Carter Bromac from the rail. This veteran may have the edge, coming from Albion Park, with a generous scoop of finishes for Ron Sallis.

#6 Codafew will be a strong exotic partner from mid-field, with trainer Lola Weidemann in the bike.
