Australian horse racing picks for Bathurst and Cairns

May 27th, 2020

One of the Australian meetings available for BetAmerica horseplayers tonight is Bathurst, which is home to Australia’s most famous car race, the Bathurst 1000. For decades, Ford and Holden have gone up against each other in the grueling, 620-mile annual race around the Mount Panorama circuit.

It’s horsepower of a different kind there tonight, as the Thoroughbred track will hold a seven-race card.

Here is a pick for the lid opener at Bathurst, and another for the Queensland meeting at Cairns.

Bathurst, Race 1: #4 Twilight Sun

This 3-year-old gelding is from the stable of leading Sydney trainer Bjorn Baker, and he has a terrific strike rate when he takes horses on the nearly three-hour drive to Bathurst.

Twilight Sun was only narrowly defeated last start, in a tougher race than this at Parkes. Tonight he'll drop down in class, and the blinkers go on for the first time.

Jockey Chad Lever has been engaged and should give Twilight Sun a great run from the inside gate. While the horse has never been tested over the distance, he has given every indication it won’t pose any problems.

The 5-2 morning-line odds might be a bit generous, but hopefully 2-1 will be on offer!

Cairns, Race 4: #3 Super Mario

Talk about a consistent galloper, who always gives his best! Super Mario has only missed the top three in one of his last seven starts.

The rising 7-year-old gelding already has a win to his name at Cairns this preparation, and he wasn’t far away in his last start, which was also at Cairns. He’ll appreciate a slightly drier track tonight, and with a comfortable run in transit, should be very tough to hold out.

Good luck!
