Australian horse racing picks for Newcastle and Kilmore

April 22nd, 2020

There is plenty of Australian action for BetAmerica horseplayers tonight, with four Thoroughbred meetings and two harness meetings joining us from Down Under.

I’ve studied what Australians refer to as "the form" and have a couple picks to share. Good luck!

Newcastle, Race 1: #4 Magnate

From the stable of Sydney’s leading trainer, Chris Waller, this recently gelded 3-year-old has been racing in much better company, so he will appreciate the drop back to provincial class.

It’s best to forget his last start at Warwick Farm, where he clearly didn’t handle the heavy track. Before that, he ran home well on the Kensington circuit at Randwick, and he has placed on the inner track at Newcastle before.

Magnate should appreciate the firmer track tonight, and the step up to 7 1/2 furlongs will also play in his favor. At 9-1 on the morning line, he looks a great each-way chance in the lid opener at Newcastle.

Kilmore, Race 1: #9 Fortessa

This Lloyd Kennewell-trained 3-year-old filly returns from a break. Some of her best runs have been first off the layoff, so she must enjoy returning to race conditions.

At her first run back from a break last campaign, she just missed the placings at Bendigo. That was over the same distance as tonight’s race. Fortessa has also performed well in a recent trial at Caulfield.

Speaking of Caulfield, that’s where Fortessa raced last. Kilmore is quite the step down in terms of class, so she’ll benefit from being back at a provincial level of racing.

She’ll probably drop from her 8-1 morning-line odds, but she should still present a value.
