Australian horse racing picks for Warwick Farm and Doomben

May 12th, 2020

Three city tracks under the spotlight in Australia tonight, including Warwick Farm in Sydney, Doomben in Brisbane, and Ascot in Perth.

Here are a couple picks for the evening, and the names certainly have an Aussie flavor to them! One of them is actually called Aussie. The other one has "Rippa" in its name, and that’s Australian slang for awesome.

Good luck!

Warwick Farm, Race 3: #3 Aussie

This Warwick Farm-trained 3-year-old gelding disappointed in his last start. It’s possible the step up to 6 furlongs was the issue. He led for much of the trip but faded in the final furlong and came in ninth, in a blanket finish.

Two starts ago, in his first run back from a break, Aussie bolted in over 5 furlongs at Gosford. That was the second time in six starts he had saluted over that distance. The switch back to 5 furlongs tonight will be in Aussie’s favor, and his early speed and free-running nature should help him overcome the wide barrier.

He’ll be fitter in his third run back, and leading trainer Bjorn Baker has also opted to put blinkers back on, which should keep Aussie's mind on the job. At 5-2 on the morning line, I think Aussie can get the job done.

Doomben, Race 2: #8 She’s Our Rippa

There are a few having their first start in this race, but you can’t beat race experience. She’s Our Rippa has yet to break through in seven starts, but the 3-year-old filly has recorded a couple placings. She nearly broke her maiden at Doomben in her last start, when she kicked clear by three lengths in the straight, but was mowed down right on the line.

Tonight’s race is a quarter-furlong shorter, and she should be able to get another nice run in front. The 7-2 morning-line odds look generous.
