Australian horse racing picks for Wyong and Wangaratta
There’s some solid Australian provincial thoroughbred meetings for BetAmerica horseplayers tonight, with the first race, from Wangaratta in Victoria, chiming in at 10:55 p.m. ET.
Wyong, Cairns, and Goulburn are the other three thoroughbred venues, while two Australian harness racing meetings will also be available to bet.
Here are a couple picks in some of the early races to help get your night started on the right note.
Wyong, Race 1: #3 Highbury
The favorite, #1 Significance, is likely to be odds-on in this race, and the John O’Shea-trained colt looks hard to beat.
But if you’re looking for a value runner, it’s hard to go past the Gerald Ryan-trained #3 Highbury. After an encouraging debut campaign, the 3-year-old returns from a break as a gelding tonight.
He's had two trials at his home course, Rosehill, in recent weeks, and both were on heavy tracks. He gets a good track tonight, and those trials should have him fit enough to run well over the mile, in his first run back from a break.
Highbury has started at Wyong a couple times before, and on one occasion was only narrowly defeated. At 13-1 on the morning line, he looks a solid chance of causing an upset.
Wangaratta, Race 2: #3 Old Head
This 4-year-old gelding is set for his second race start, after what was an impressive debut performance at Pakenham.
He had a cozy run behind the leader and got caught in a pocket for a furlong after they turned for home. When he finally found some galloping room, he attacked the line with gusto but was beaten by the winning post.
Old Head will appreciate the additional furlong tonight and has drawn a nice gate to get a similar on-speed run. Barring bad luck, he should win this race.
Good luck!
