Australian Pick 3 for Canterbury on Apr. 21

Multi-race wagers like the Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 5 are among the most popular in American racing. For those stateside bettors that have been dabbling in Australian racing during this time of limited domestic product, it's worth noting a few multi-race opportunities exist on a nightly basis per card.

Another bit of good news is that these multi-race wagers can be played for a little as 20 cents per combination, which makes spreading on some of the larger fields more affordable and perhaps adds a level of comfort to those getting more familiar with the nuances of Australian racing.

For the action at Canterbury in Sydney on Tuesday night (U.S. time), we'll take a look at the Pick 3 that runs from race 3 through 5.

Canterbury ("Australia B") kicks off at 10:50 p.m. (EDT), with the Pick 3 starting at midnight. At this writing, the course is listed as "Soft 5" with conditions potentially becoming firmer.

Race 3

A couple horses in this maiden with fewer losses hold the most appeal. #4 EPILINE (3-1), third in both outings, appeared to handle heavy ground at Warwick Farm better than most when behind Flinders, who'll be well backed to repeat in the race after this. #8 SHUHOOD (18-1) has endured significant gaps between starts, but was hampered a bit in latest comeback and need not have to find much more off her first two runs at Canterbury and Warwick Farm to contend. #7 PERFECT IMPRESSION (5-1) has placed in half of her six starts and has been running well of late.

Race 4

As noted, #6 FLINDERS (5-2) will be favored to successfully stretch out three-sixteenths of a mile after a recent maiden win, but won't sleep on some other possibilities. Fellow Chris Waller trainee #7 MIYAKE (9-2) probably disliked the heavy ground last time but is playable off runner-up finish at similar conditions here in late January. #4 MAYBACH (11-1) will have to show more to beat this group, but looms a potential danger second-up and appears to have more positional speed than most. #1 HARPO MARX (6-1) beat some stragglers home in a softer spot at Hawkesbury on Apr. 4, his first start ever in Australia and since July as well. Beaten only five lengths in the Queen's Vase (G3) last summer at Royal Ascot, so improvement possible here.

Race 5

Will use just two fillies in this one. Stakes-placed #3 REGIMENTAL BAND (8-1) has looked unimposing in two of her last three, but those were in group stakes. This spot seemingly more manageable. However, she'll have to produce a strong kick to catch #1 ROMANTIC WHISPER (3-1), who could have everything her own way up front as the lone apparent speed.

The minimum is 20 cents, but we'll play a 60-cent ticket.
