Australian racing picks for Doomben and Canterbury Park

April 21st, 2020

There’s some quality Australian thoroughbred action available for BetAmerica horseplayers tonight, with four city tracks available from just after 9 p.m. ET.

Wednesday racing in Australia (Tuesday night here) is typically the second biggest day of the week, and tonight is no exception. One of Brisbane’s leading tracks, Doomben, is holding a 10-race card, while one of Sydney’s top courses, Canterbury Park, is staging an eight-race card.

Here are some picks to get your night started on (hopefully) a winning note!

Canterbury Park, Race 3: #7 Perfect Impression

Trained by Anthony Cummings, this 3-year-old filly nearly gave her fans a perfect impression in her last start at Newcastle.

She was racing over a mile for the first time this campaign, was given a lovely ride on the speed, and hit the front with a furlong to go, but she was collared right on the line. The leading pair put a lot of space between themselves and the rest of the field, though.

Perfect Impression has had a mini freshening since then, and with this now her third run back from a break, she’ll be fitter and better for her last run, which was over the same distance as tonight’s race.

One of Sydney’s leading riders, Nash Rawiller, will jump back on board, and from a good gate, he’ll be able to put her in a nice position and be ready to strike at the pointy end of the race.

Doomben, Race 5: #2 Shadow of Time

This 3-year-old gelding has returned from a break in fine form. He won well first up, on a soft track at the Sunshine Coast, before he headed to Doomben for his second assignment of the campaign two weeks ago. On that day, he was caught wide, but finished his race strongly.

Shadow Of Time steps up in distance to 6 3/4 furlongs today, a trip that should suit him, considering how well he sprinted home over 6 furlongs at Doomben last start. A little more give in the ground will also play in his favor. Jockey Dale Smith knows the horse well and will give him every hope of making it two wins from three starts this campaign.
