Australian racing picks for Doomben and Royal Randwick

August 21st, 2020

One of the greatest horses of the modern era will be honored in Australia tonight, with the running of the Winx Stakes (G1) at Royal Randwick.

Winx, trained by Chris Waller at Rosehill, won a record 33 consecutive races, including an incredible 25 Group 1 events. Jockey Hugh Bowman was on board for all of those Group 1 wins and all but one of the 33 straight.

I was lucky enough to witness Winx in action and report on the magnificent mare during her phenomenal career, and I doubt I’ll ever see another racehorse quite like her.

It’s only fitting that a classy field will contest tonight’s Winx Stakes, with nine Group 1 winners in the race.

BetAmerica horseplayers can watch and wager on the full card from Royal Randwick tonight, with the first race scheduled for 10 p.m ET.

Doomben, Moonee Valley, and the Gold Coast are the other meetings available.

Here are a couple picks to get your night of Aussie racing action underway.

Randwick, Race 3: #2 New King

This son of Frankel started his career in the United Kingdom, and has now had two runs in Australia, including an impressive win in his last start at Rosehill a couple of weeks ago.

There are bigger races to come for New King, and with more improvement expected, he looks well placed to take care of this field tonight.

He’ll appreciate the sting out of the ground, and jockey James McDonald sticking solid is an added bonus.

Randwick, Race 7: #7 Master Of Wine

This is a fantastic field, with a number of Group 1 winners kickstarting their spring carnival campaigns.

One of the potential stars of the spring is Master Of Wine, who strung four straight wins together last campaign, before he had no luck in the Queen Elizabeth (G1).

It may be a bit short for him tonight, but he’s never missed the board in five starts first up. I’m expecting a big run and looking forward to watching him tonight and throughout the carnival.

Doomben, Race 1: #3 Eelloh

I picked Eelloh a couple of weeks ago, and she got the chocolates for us, and I simply can’t go past her again tonight.

She was impressive in her last start at Doomben. She raced off the speed and then put them away down the stretch with a blistering finish.

Jockey Jim Byrne sticks, and you’d have to think, based on her racing style, the extra furlong tonight should really suit Eelloh.

That’s it for tonight’s tips, but if you’re looking for something Down Under tomorrow night, check out #4 Bellatavi in the first race at Devonport.

Good luck!
