Australian racing picks for Rosehill and Sunshine Coast
Wednesday racing in Australia (Tuesday night in the U.S.) is traditionally the second-biggest day of the week, and more often than not, the high-profile city tracks are in operation.
Tonight is no exception. Rosehill Gardens is scheduled to put on eight races, with the first set to kick off at 10:25 p.m. ET. Farther north in the state of Queensland, the Sunshine Coast has nine races, with the first scheduled for 10:08 p.m. ET.
There has been a substantial amount of rain around Rosehill, so be sure to look out for runners who can handle a sloppy track. There is also a little rain in the forecast for the Sunshine Coast, but the track should remain firm. They have a saying in tropical Queensland. that it’s "beautiful one day, perfect the next," and when the sun comes out, it doesn’t take long for their tracks to dry.
Here are a couple of picks to follow, as you enjoy all the Aussie action tonight.
Rosehill Gardens, Race 5: #7 Yonkers
This gelding, by North American sire Medaglia D’oro, has been impressive since he returned from a break, with two wins in his last three races. He stepped up in distance last start and hit the line strongly to finish within a length of the winner.
Tonight’s task is back at the same track but a half-furlong shorter, and with fitness on his side and proven ability on a sloppy track, Yonkers looks to be the one to beat. Jockey Hugh Bowman jumps back on, after he piloted the horse to victory two starts back. The morning-line odds of 7-1 are succulent!
Sunshine Coast, Race 4: #1 City Smart
City Smart has yet to find the winning post in five starts, but in his two runs back from a break, he has given every indication he’ll shake his maiden status soon.
Tonight’s assignment is much easier than last time at Doomben. On that occasion he settled back, then ran home well to finish within two lengths of the winner. He’s fitter now, will appreciate the step up in distance, and gun jockey, Robbie Fradd, should get a nice, cozy run from the gate. City Smart will be storming home late, and with any luck, he should finish over the top of his rivals.
