Australian racing picks for Rosehill Gardens
A nine-race card awaits us at Rosehill Gardens tonight, and eight are group races. The Tancred (G1) and Vinery Stud (G1) are the highlights of a strong meeting, which will be run on a soft track, following a fair amount of rain in Sydney over the last couple weeks.
This meeting was under the threat of being abandoned, after it was revealed high-profile jockey, Mark Zahra, had shared a flight with a passenger who had subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. Fortunately, Zahra’s test for the coronavirus came back negative, and racing in Australia was given the green light to resume.
Here are some selections to follow, as you sit back in self-isolation and enjoy a "cracking" card of racing action from Down Under tonight.
Race 5, #12 Handle the Truth
He resumed from a break for an impressive win in the nation’s capital March 8. On that occasion, he did plenty of work early and was lumped with the equivalent of 135 pounds (61.5 kilograms). He gets serious weight relief tonight, when he only has to carry 118 pounds (53.5 kilograms).
The 4-year-old gelding has five wins from eight attempts over this distance and also performs very well in his second run back from a break. Fingers crossed those juicy, morning-line odds of 8-1 hold up!
Race 6, #9 Verry Elleegant
This 4-year-old mare is on the quick backup, after she was narrowly beaten by top-class European stayer Addeybb last weekend in the Ranvet (G1). Verry Elleegant lost no admirers with that effort, particularly as the rest of the field was more than five lengths behind her.
The two favourites fight out the G1 Ranvet with the British visitors taking the prize! #Addeybb (#Pivotal) wins with the man of the moment @TomMarquand for the @WilliamHaggas stable to defeat Waller's Verry Elleegant, with #Avilius a distant third. 📽️Sky pic.twitter.com/WwcObR1nQS

The Chris Waller-trained star is shooting for her third Group 1 victory tonight, and when Waller runs his horses on successive weekends, they generally run very well.
The extra two furlongs will suit, she’s been heavily supported in Australia, and with gun jockey James McDonald in the saddle, she’ll be very hard to beat.
