Australian racing picks for Randwick

May 1st, 2020

It’s the biggest night of the week for Australian racing, and BetAmerica horseplayers can feast on four quality venues — Randwick, Newcastle, Doomben, and Ascot.

Tonight’s Randwick meeting is taking place on the inner track, also known as the Kensington circuit. With a little bit of rain around, it could pay to watch the early races in order to identify any possible track patterns.

There’s a smart youngster going around in Race 1, called Wild Ruler. I haven’t included him in my selections below, as he will probably start around the 3-2 favorite. He is destined for bigger and better things this campaign, and all going well, he will head north to the Brisbane winter carnival and contest a Group 1 race called the J.J. Atkins. He will be very tough to beat tonight.

Here are a couple of other picks for the Randwick meeting.

Randwick, Race 2: #2 Yonkers

This 4-year-old gelding — by North American sire Medaglia d’Oro — is on the quick backup, after an exceptional run at Rosehill seven days ago.

He raced wide without cover for much of the trip, but still managed to finish strongly for third, along behind stablemate Welsh Legend, who is also in tonight’s race. He meets his Chris Waller-trained stablemate better at the weights tonight.

With a nicer gate and a more comfortable run, Yonkers should be tough to hold out for champion jockey Hugh Bowman. I’m loving those 7-1 morning-line odds!

Randwick, Race 7: # 9 Hilo

This Godolphin 3-year-old has been racing consistently in stakes races, and hasn’t missed the placings this campaign.

The last time he raced on the inner track at Randwick he absolutely smashed the field, or as Australian racing fans like to say, he donkey-licked the opposition.

Tonight’s race is over the same distance, and the same jockey, Rachel King, will be aboard. He is taking on older horses, but he is well weighted.

The 3-1 morning line odds for Hilo are about as skinny as you want to take. Hopefully we can get bigger odds tonight and get the chocolates.

All the best for a big weekend of racing at home and abroad!
