Australian racing picks for Royal Randwick

May 8th, 2020

There are four quality Australian meetings available for BetAmerica horseplayers tonight, starting with the Queensland meeting at Doomben, which kicks off at 9:20 p.m. ET.

I’m keen on a few at the track they call "headquarters" in Sydney — iconic Royal Randwick. The first race gets underway at 9:35 p.m. ET there and the track will be rated in the good to soft range, as it is drying out quickly after some recent rain.

In case you were wondering, it’s called "Royal" Randwick because, after Queen Elizabeth visited the track in 1992, a formal request was put to her to place the "Royal" tag. Her Majesty gave her blessing, of course.

The Queen was on a call with the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison this week and said she was pleased to see Australian horse racing has been able to continue uninterrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. So are we!

Here are some picks for tonight.

Randwick, Race 1: #6 Hellenism

Hellenism returned from a break at Randwick a few weeks ago, over the same trip as tonight’s race. She raced a little fresh on that occasion but still managed to grind out an encouraging third.

She’ll be fitter for this run and looks ready to strike tonight. She is drawn to get a good run, just behind the speed, and jockey Tim Clark sticks. She also has a fantastic record in her second run back from a break.

Randwick, Race 4: #2 Subpoenaed

This 3-year-old filly from the Chris Waller stable is as fit as mallee bull. She'll drop in class tonight, after a superb run at Randwick in a Group 3 race. Subpoenaed was last as they rounded the turn and flashed home for second, behind a smart one called Rubisaki.

She has drawn an inside gate tonight, so won’t have to do as much work, and will have Irish apprentice jockey Robbie Dolan aboard, which will lessen the load she would have otherwise carried.

We're expecting her to run a big race.

Randwick, Race 6: #11 Loveseat

This Godolphin mare has come back strong for this preparation. In her last start at Canterbury, she rounded them up in a few strides and ran away with an explosive victory.

That race was just under a mile in distance, and the extra furlong tonight will certainly suit her.

In-form jockey Hugh Bowman should be sitting pretty on Loveseat at the pointy end of the race and use her turn of foot when it counts. Those 7-1 morning-line odds look great!

Hope you find a few winners.
