Australian racing picks for Sale and Canterbury
As Australia heads into winter, it is sometimes difficult to find racing on a dry track. Of the four Thoroughbred meetings available for BetAmerica horseplayers tonight, three will take place on rain-affected ground.
The state of Queensland is where you are most likely to find dry tracks in the winter months, and that’s the case tonight at Warwick, where they will race on a good-rated surface.
Here is a pick for Warwick and another for the Victorian meeting at Sale, which is likely to race on soft ground.
Warwick, Race 2: #2 Beware
This 4-year-old gelding, by high-profile sire Exceed And Excel, has had two runs this campaign, and both have been brilliant. Most recently, he was too speedy for his opposition at Toowoomba and booted clear down the stretch, after he led into the final turn.
Tonight’s field doesn’t look any stronger, and he will be even fitter after those two runs back. Jockey Billie-Rose Derbyshire sticks, and the horse is drawn to get a decent run just on the pace. Those 11-4 morning-line odds look about right.
Sale, Race 2: #9 Not For Izzy
This 3-year-old gelding has come close in his last two starts. First-up from a break at Moe, he didn’t quite get a clear crack at them on the business end. In his last start, he ran into smart one called Blue Ocean, who has since gone on to nearly win a race at Melbourne’s premier track, Flemington.
I like that leading Melbourne jockey Craig Williams will jump on, and with the inside gate, he should be able to put Not For Izzy in a nice position on the speed. The slight step up in distance to 1 1/16 miles should suit him, and while I don’t think we’ll get close to those 6-1 morning-line odds, 3-1 will do the trick!
