Australian racing picks for Taree and Sale

May 11th, 2020

It’s a return to country and provincial racing tonight, after a weekend of Group 1 racing that saw the emergence of a new Melbourne Cup (G1) favorite!

Russian Camelot, by European sire Camelot, is now a 10-1 favorite with local bookmakers for Australia’s famous 2-mile race, after a commanding win in the South Australia Derby (G1) on Saturday. The 3-year-old colt, trained by reigning Melbourne Cup-winning horseman Danny O’Brien, raced three-deep around the turn in the 1 5/8 mile contest, before he sprinted home to beat talented opposition, including Dalasan and Victoria Derby (G1) winner Warning.

The win also catapulted Russian Camelot to the top of Caulfield Cup (G1) betting (9-1), and he firmed for the weight-for-age Cox Plate (G1) at Moonee Valley (25/1 to 14/1). Whichever way O’Brien goes with Russian Camelot, the horse is surely going to be in for a big spring carnival later in the year.

So, you’re ready for some winners for tonight, right? There are three Aussie Thoroughbred meetings and two harness meetings available for BetAmerica horseplayers tonight. Here are some picks for Taree and Sale.

Taree, Race 2: No. 5 Salamangkera

This 3-year-old filly returned from a 16-week break at Taree a couple weeks ago and ran well fresh. She began swiftly, stalked the leader, and momentarily looked like a winner in the straight. Race fitness cost her on that occasion, as a few ran past her inside the final furlong.

Salamangkera will be fitter tonight, and she placed over this track and trip the last time she was second up from a break. She’s drawn a favorable barrier tonight, and jockey Rachel Murray sticks. At 9-1 on the morning line, she looks a great win/place/show prospect.

Sale, Race 6: #10 Bless Her

By North American sire Street Boss, this 3-year-old filly broke her maiden in fine form when she returned from a break at Sale last start.

She broke well, eyeballed the leader, and responded in an instant when jockey Jye McNeil pushed the button in the straight.

Bless Her will get the same soft-track conditions tonight, and McNeil is aboard again. The additional distance will suit her, and she is drawn well to get another nice run in transit. The 9-2 morning-line odds look generous!

Hope you have a winning start to your week.
