Australian racing picks for Warrnambool and Canterbury
It was a thrilling first day of the Warrnambool carnival, and there’s more to come tonight! Now that the jumps racing is out of the way, it’s back to a full card of flat racing tonight, including the Wangoom Handicap (6 furlongs) and the Warrnambool Cup (1 1/2 miles).
We managed to get the carnival started with a winner (So Belafonte) last night, so fingers crossed we can find another tonight. Here’s a pick for racing at "the Bool," and one for the Sydney meeting at Canterbury.
Warrnambool, Race 2: #7 Street Tough
This lightly raced 5-year-old gelding returned from a break with an encouraging fourth at Geelong in mid-April. The horse who finished second in that race, Atlantica, went on to win a race Saturday at Sandown.
Street Tough has won second-up before, and has won three out of his five starts on a soft-rated track, which he'll get tonight. He is drawn to get a nice run just behind the speed, and while most of his best performances have come at distances a half-furlong shorter, I think he can run a solid six furlongs tonight.
The morning-line odds of 7-2 look about right.
Canterbury, Race 4: #6 Earth Song
From the stable of leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller, Earth Song commenced her latest campaign with a hard-fought win at Wyong over 6 3/4 furlongs. She followed that up with a solid second at Warwick Farm, where she hit the front momentarily in the straight but wads run down by Amitto on a heavy track.
She's back on a soft track today, and at a distance she’s won at before. Earth Song should be rock-hard fit now, having two runs back, and will be tough to beat tonight. She also gets the services of leading Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman.
Good luck!
