Australian racing picks for Warwick Farm, Eagle Farm

March 24th, 2020

With global sports on lockdown, thank goodness for horse racing! Four Australian venues are available for BetAmerica players to bet on this evening, including an exciting, eight-race card at Sydney’s Warwick Farm, and an additional eight races from Eagle Farm in Brisbane.

With Race 1 from Warwick Farm at 10:35 p.m. ET Tuesday and Race 1 from Eagle Farm at 10:53 p.m. ET, I’ve identified a couple early winners to help you build a bank and, as they say in Australia, "punt on the ponies" long into the night.

In case you were wondering, not all Aussie tracks are called “farms,” and they’re certainly not racing among sheep and cows. These tracks are named after the suburbs in which they are located, and back in the day, both areas were once important farmlands.

Now that we've cleared that up, here are some winners!

Warwick Farm, Race 1: #2 Damaged

This Exceed And Excel colt returns from a spell, after he made an impressive debut at Royal Randwick on Dec. 26. On that occasion Damaged showed a ton of early speed, but his inexperience was also on display, when he over-raced for a furlong or so mid-trip. Despite being a little green, he finished strongly to be less than a length behind the winner and well ahead of the rest of the pack.

Damaged was ridden by an apprentice jockey in his first race, and this time, in-form English jockey Tom Marquand will jump aboard for the same 5 1/2-furlong trip. With race-day experience now under his belt, the services of Marquand, and the fact he was a hard-held winner of a recent trial, Damaged should prove very hard to beat in the opening race.

Eagle Farm, Race 2: #7 Papaya

This 2-year-old filly by U.S. sire Dream Ahead ran home strongly first time out, for a one-length second on a heavily rain-affected surface. Race fitness looked to cost her over the final furlong that day, and she’ll certainly be better for this run.

She has drawn ideally in gate 2 and apprentice jockey, Justin Huxtable, keeps the ride. Huxtable’s weight relief, combined with the extra half-furlong and firmer track, should see this girl get the chocolates.
