Authentic closes as individual favorite in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3
An eye-catching victory in Saturday’s San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita stamped Authentic as the new favorite for the 2020 Kentucky Derby (G1), with bettors pounding the undefeated colt down to 6-1 in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3.
A 2 1/4-length triumph in the 1 1/16-mile San Felipe prompted Authentic’s odds to fall from 12-1 on the morning line to half that price by the time the three-day pool closed at 6 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. Conditioned by five-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert, Authentic narrowly edged out Holy Bull (G3) winner Tiz the Law (7-1)for favoritism among the 23 individual betting interests.
For the 15th time in the last 18 years, the “All Other 3-Year-Olds” option closed as the overall favorite at 4-1. Support for the popular catch-all option undoubtedly rolled in after King Guillermo and Mischevious Alex—two colts unavailable for individual betting—claimedvictories in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) and Gotham (G3) on Saturday afternoon.
Authentic wasn’t the only Baffert trainee to receive heavy support in Future Wager Pool 3. San Vicente (G2) winner Nadal was the third individual choice at 10-1, while impressive maiden winner Charlatan closed as the 12-1 fourth choice.
Honor A. P., who gamely chased home Authentic in the San Felipe, received plenty of support for Derby-winning trainer John Shirreffs, settling at 14-1. San Felipe third-place finisher and reigning champion 2-year-old Storm the Court closed at 60-1, while Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) winner Thousand Words—a Baffert trainee who unexpectedly weakened to fourth in the San Felipe—was cold in the wagering at 34-1.
The list of betting interests was rounded out by Basin (38-1), Chance It (53-1), Enforceable (23-1), Ete Indien (16-1), Gouverneur Morris (26-1), Independence Hall (27-1), Major Fed (42-1), Max Player (71-1), Maxfield (15-1), Modernist (35-1), Royal Act (60-1), Silver Prospector (24-1), Sole Volante (20-1), Spa City (104-1), Three Technique (29-1), and Wells Bayou (62-1).
Total wagering in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 fell slightly to $356,668, down from $385,464 for the corresponding pool in 2019.
The 146th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, May 2, at Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Oaks (G1) will take place the day prior, and “All Others” was also the favorite in the lone Oaks Future Wager conducted Friday through Sunday. The mutuel field was 3-1, while Venetian Harbor was the favorite individual interest at 4-1.
