Best exotic wagers for Breeders' Cup Friday 2022

November 3rd, 2022

Breeders’ Cup Friday at Keeneland is packed with enticing exotic wagers. Exactas, trifectas, superfectas, Pick 3s, Pick 4s… there are so many options, it can be hard to know where to begin.

It’s often easier to pick winners than sort out minor placings, so we’ll favor multi-race wagers when betting Breeders’ Cup Friday. Here are three suggested plays to pursue on a ~$75 budget:

Race 7: Pick 4

The 50-cent Pick 4 kicking off in Race 7 is comprised entirely of Breeders’ Cup races, making it one of the most enticing multi-race wagers of the day.

First up is the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), in which we’re keen to support speedy Frizette (G1) runner-up #2 You’re My Girl (10-1) as a live longshot. If we can get You’re My Girl home on top at double-digit odds, we’ll be well on our way to cashing a lucrative payoff… but for good measure, we’ll use Frizette winner #10 Chocolate Gelato (7-2) and stretch-running Alcibiades (G1) runner-up #7 Chop Chop (4-1) as backup.

The second leg is the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1), in which the speedy American fillies #5 Pleasant Passage (12-1) and #9 Delight (6-1) figure to be formidable on the front end. We’ll also use #7 Spirit Gal (20-1) as a live longshot; the Irish raider defeated next-out Group 3 stakes winner Cairo when nabbing the Star Appeal S. against males last time out.

In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), #3 Cave Rock (4-5) is the fastest horse on paper and a viable single after rattling off three victories from three starts, including blowout wins in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and American Pharoah (G1).

MUCCIOLO: Tipsheet: 2022 Breeders' Cup Juvenile

The Pick 4 concludes with the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). We’ll favor the Solario (G3) and Autumn (G3) winner #4 Silver Knott (3-1), whose trainer—Charlie Appleby—has saddled three winners from four starters in the Juvenile Turf. But although Silver Knott is formidable, two-time Grade 3 winner #2 Packs a Wahlop (6-1) and stretch-running Pilgrim (G2) runner-up #8 I’m Very Busy (9-2) aren’t impossible win threats for the home team.

  • $1 Pick 4: 2,7,10 with 5,7,9 with 3 with 2,4,8 ($27)
  • $1 Pick 4: 2,7,10 with 5,7,9 with 3 with 4 ($9)
    Total: $36

Race 9: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile/Breeders’ Cup Classic Double

A special two-day double wager links the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). We’ve already outlined #3 Cave Rock (4-5) as a viable single in the Juvenile, and the Classic similarly features a standout favorite in the form of #4 Flightline (3-5).

SCULLY: Flightline seeks new heights in Breeders' Cup Classic

Flightline is unbeaten and unchallenged in five starts, most recently posting an otherworldly 19 1/4-length victory in the Pacific Classic (G1). The wildly talented son of Tapit will be tough to beat if he brings his A-game to Keeneland, so why not have some fun and play Cave Rock and Flightline in a cold double? The payoff won’t be huge, but you won’t find two more likely winners across the 14 Breeders’ Cup races.

  • $25 Double: 3 with 4

Race 10: Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf/Breeders’ Cup Turf Double

Another special double wager links the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf with Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1). For the purpose of this wager, we recommend taking a stand with #4 Silver Knott (3-1) as a single in the Juvenile Turf; that way, we can afford to spread a bit deeper in the Turf.

MUCCIOLO: Tipsheet: 2022 Breeders' Cup Turf

The Turf has come up tough with several viable win contenders. #5 Rebel’s Romance (3-1) is 4-for-4 since switching to grass and enters off back-to-back Group 1 wins in Germany, but #11 Mishriff (6-1) has been facing tougher competition and may find some class relief at Keeneland. Nor can we dismiss the American mare #2 War Like Goddess (9-2) after her big win against males in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1).

  • $5 Double: 4 with 2,5,11 ($15)

Good luck!
