Considering going for a longshot? Hanson's choice is #8 Charge It. "Although he's far from the finished article, and thus will need a lot of luck to prevail, Charge It has a lot of tools to become a serious racehorse, perhaps as soon as Saturday."

Looking at the Pick 6 ending with the Kentucky Derby, Kilroy is putting #3 Epicenter above all others. "Passing key company in the Risen Star S. (G2) and Louisiana Derby (G2) with ease and then gearing down, he will no doubt unleash a memorable late run in the Kentucky Derby."

Sara has followed the Arkansas road to the Kentucky Derby trail closely and here are her thoughts:

"Oaklawn Park is my home track, so I naturally root for contenders who take the Arkansas road to the Kentucky Derby. I have attempted to handicap this year’s Kentucky Derby without bias, and I still believe Cyberknife, winner of the Arkansas Derby (G1), could wear the roses on Saturday.

"At 20-1 odds, he offers an opportunity for a nice score. The versatile chestnut colt also has wins at the Kentucky Derby host track and Fair Grounds. The one blemish in his resume came in the Lecomte S. (G3), where he took a wide trip. Cyberknife was sired by Gun Runner, the 2017 Horse of the Year, whose progeny broke all-time earnings records for a first-crop sire, so his pedigree is top notch.

"Cyberknife is conditioned by Louisville native Brad Cox, the winner of the last two Eclipse Awards as trainer of the year. He also sent out Mandaloun, who was named the 2021 Derby winner in February after the disqualification of Medina Spirit. Cox grew up two blocks from Churchill on Evelyn Avenue, and I would be elated to see him experience the thrill of the Derby winner’s circle.

"Cyberknife will be piloted by Florent Geroux, who was Gun Runner and Mandaloun’s jockey. The 35-year-old native of France was unable to see his brother for more than two years because of the COVID-19 restrictions overseas, and his brother recently arrived in Louisville to support 'FloJo' in the Derby.

"My second choice is the second choice on the morning line, Epicenter. He completed a near-sweep of the four Louisiana prep races (he lost the Lecomte by a head), winning the three by daylight scores. He is trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, the all-time winningest thoroughbred trainer in North America. Despite his unmatched success, Asmussen has yet to win the Kentucky Derby. His horses have come in second twice.

"To round out the trifecta, I’m selecting Messier. The multiple graded stakes winner has finished in the top two in each of his six starts. He won the Robert B. Lewis S. (G3) by an astounding 15 lengths. Although the field was small, he earned high speed figures, and the west coast horses have traditionally performed well in the Kentucky Derby. Messier, whose sheer size is impressive, was recently transferred from the barn of Bob Baffert to trainer Tim Yakteen."
