Weekday picks and plays for Thoroughbred racing.
Monday, Aug. 10
Presque Isle Downs, Race 5: Tom Ridge S. (6 furlongs, 6:25 p.m. ET)
#10 Newstome (6-1 on the morning line) looms as a formidable contender in this sprint for 3-year-olds over the Tapeta course. Trained by Michael Trombetta, who has gone 25-for-104 (24%) in sprints at Presque Isle Downs since 2015, Newstome is a three-time stakes winner, with a blend of tactical speed and finishing strength.
Newstome is 2-for-2 on Tapeta. He won the Mark McDermott S. over this track and distance in the fall, then dominated the 6-furlong Woodstock S. at Woodbine by 5 1/2 lengths over the graded stakes-placed runner Untitled. Newstome has also shown class on dirt, where he rallied to win the 2019 James F. Lewis III S. with a 97 Brisnet Speed rating that tops the Tom Ridge field.
Newstome never fired over a sloppy track in Belmont Park’s Gold Fever S. last month, but a return to Tapeta can send Newstome back to the winner’s circle with hot jockey Scott Spieth (a 30% winner at Presque Isle Downs) aboard.
A win bet is in order, and we’ll also play Newstome on top of #4 Holy High (8-1) and #8 Skol Factor (5-1) in a couple small exactas.
$24 to win on #10 Newstome
$3 exacta: 10 with 4,8 ($6)
Total: $30
Good luck!
