Weekday picks and plays for Thoroughbred racing.
Monday, Aug. 24
Presque Isle Downs, Race 5: Lady Erie S. (6 furlongs, 6:25 p.m. ET)
This sprint for 3-year-old fillies seems destined for a pace meltdown. At least five of the nine entrants prefer to set or press the pace, including the favored Wesley Ward-trained fillies #9 Artie’s Princess (2-1 on the morning line) and #7 Owlette (3-1).
This could lend an advantage to the stretch-running #2 Mom’s Red Lipstick (8-1). The daughter Race Day went 2-for-3 over the synthetic track at Arlington Park last season, and she most notably rallied to victory in the 7-furlong Arlington-Washington Lassie S., so tackling the Tapeta track at Presque Isle Downs shouldn’t be an issue.
MOM’S RED LIPSTICK (Race Day), Jose Lopez, wins the Arlington-Washington Lassie for @ArlingtonRacing All-Time Stakes winning trainer Chris Block saying, “When it’s time to put it on in the afternoon she knows what to do.” He added Kentucky or @WoodbineTB (AW) possible next stop. pic.twitter.com/X834B98peD

Mom’s Red Lipstick enters the Lady Erie off an eye-catching victory in a 1-mile turf allowance at Arlington, in which she overcame a slow start to swoop past her rivals and cruise home on top.
A bullet 3-furlong workout in :34 2/5 Aug. 20 suggests Mom’s Red Lipstick is still in good form, and for good measure, jockey Pablo Morales (a 27% winner at Presque Isle Downs) will take the mount.
Let’s bet Mom’s Red Lipstick to win and play her on top of the Ward fillies in the exacta.
$20 to win on #2 Mom’s Red Lipstick
$5 exacta: 2 with 7,9 ($10)
Total: $30
Good luck!
