Weekday picks and plays for Thoroughbred racing.
Thursday, Aug. 6
Saratoga, Race 8: New York Stallion Series S. (1 1/16 miles on turf, 3:45 p.m. ET)
#6 Jolting Joe (9-5 on the morning line) and #5 Dream Bigger (2-1) are the favorites in this 1 1/16-mile turf test for New York-bred 3-year-olds, but neither appears to be unstoppable.
Jolting Joe has posted competitive Brisnet Speed ratings against good company (including Kentucky Derby contender King Guillermo), but he has never won a race. He has finished second in all four of his starts.
Dream Bigger is a three-time stakes winner against New York-breds, but he has never run farther than seven furlongs and will make his turf debut Thursday.
The filly #1 Fresco (5-2) is an interesting alternative. Trained by Christophe Clement (a 34% winner at Saratoga this summer), Fresco easily won a fillies’ division of the New York Stallion Series S. on July 23, when she rallied strongly into pedestrian fractions of :24.80, :50.08, and 1:15.30 to win the 1 1/16-mile event going away.
