Understanding Superfecta Betting

So you've mastered the win-place-show and simple exotic bets like an Exacta and Trifecta. So what's next? Why not try selecting the first four horses to cross the line?

What is a Superfecta bet in horse racing & can I place a Superfecta on Kentucky Derby?

To place a Superfecta bet, you need to choose the horses which will finish the race first, second, third, and fourth, in the correct order.

What is the minimum stake on an Superfecta bet?

The minimum stake is usually $.10 for a Superfecta bet, though some tracks do have a $1 minimum.  Online Superfecta bets have the same minimum stake as betting Superfectas at the track.

How much can I win on an Superfecta bet?

Winnings on a correctly picked Superfecta bet are based on how much you wager and there is no limit. Payoffs are determined by the pari-mutuel system: all the winning tickets share the pool of money collected less the track’s commission. Generally speaking, it is extremely difficult to correctly pick the first four finishing horses in order, but the payoffs can be massive. For example, one lucky bettor won over $28k at the 2013 Kentucky Derby on her 1st ever horse racing bet by taking a chance on the Superfecta (Read the Story Here).

If you had placed a winning $1 Superfecta bet on the 2009 Kentucky Derby you would have collected a huge $276,503.20!

What is a boxed Superfecta bet?

You still need to select the first four horses in the correct order, but by boxing your selections, they can finish in any combination. This also allows you to choose more than four runners, for an increased cost, of course.
