Betting With, and Against, Nations Pride in the Arlington Million

August 9th, 2024

Six horses will challenge morning-line favorite #4 Nations Pride (8-5) in the $1 million Arlington Million S. (G1) at Colonial Downs on Sunday.

Trained by Charlie Appleby, the multiple Grade 1 victor was last seen finishing second behind the fantastic Measured Time in the Manhattan (G1) at Saratoga. He will be especially tough to upend if he moves forward off that showing.

The Teofilo five-year-old is 6-for-9 with a pair of seconds in his career at 1 1/4 miles, and he has posted five useful morning moves, three on the grass, leading up to the feature.

There is a solid measure of early speed despite the small cast that will go postward, and that will presumably aid the powerful bay who does his best work from off of the early pace. William Buick will make the trek across the pond to pilot the classy contender.

Two horses will have the best chance to pull off the upset if the top pick fails to fire.

Todd Pletcher’s #6 Talk of the Nation (6-1) has been a miler to this stage of his development and will attempt to handle 10 furlongs for the initial time. By Quality Road, the four-year-old colt has shown some progression after a nice sophomore season and has the pedigree to run this type of distance. He’s interesting with Jose Ortiz in the stirrups.

#1 Integration (5-2) is a spotless 3-for-3 on the Colonial lawn and waltzed home a facile winner of the local prep for this race, the Million Preview S. The $700,000 yearling purchase has perhaps not lived up to his lofty expectations after dominating his first trio of career races, but he’s plenty talented and might capitalize on his familiarity with this surface Sunday. He’ll be saving ground throughout with Kendrick Carmouche in the silks.
