Breeders’ Cup Fillies Division: British Idiom, Wicked Whisper dominate
A pair of juvenile fillies put their best foot forward to add to the growing depth of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) division this weekend. The two “Win and You’re In” heroines jumped onto the leading contenders list following superb showings.
Michael Dubb et al’s British Idiom went postward as the 7-2 third choice for Friday’s $400,000 Alcibiades S. (G1) at Keeneland off the strength of her sharp maiden tally at Saratoga in the summer. The Flashback filly tracked the pace with intent from the opening bell, moved to the fore in early stretch and powered clear to a decisive 6 ½-length score under Javier Castellano. Trained by Brad Cox, the Kentucky-bred clocked 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.80 to earn her first graded win.
Grade 1 heroine Perfect Alibi was a clear second, with second-time starter and 2-1 favorite Alandra three lengths clear of her nearest foe in the show spot.
British Idiom answered the two-turn test with aplomb and will be among the favorites on Friday, November 1 at Santa Anita in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
At Belmont Park on Sunday, Alex and Joann Lieblong’s Wicked Whisper made it two-for-two following a wire-to-wire romp in the $400,000 Frizette S. (G1). The Liam’s Map filly completed her one-mile test over a fast Big Sandy surface in 1:35.92 while posting a 2 ¾-length victory under Joel Rosario.
Frank’s Rockette finished clear to earn the place spot, her third consecutive runner-up in a graded stakes, and was trailed by 12-1 shot Slam Dunk.
Kentucky-bred Wicked Whisper toppled what appeared to be a nice field of prospects on Sunday and has yet to be headed from two lifetime performances. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the chestnut lass won on debut at Saratoga in August recording an 88 BRIS Speed figure, which she improved to 97 in the Frizette.
Here is my updated top six for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) division:
1. British Idiom -- Exquisite Alcibiades vixen looks like the real deal
2. Bast -- California-based filly from the Baffert barn showed heart in Chandelier
3. Wicked Whisper -- Speedster could be any kind for Asmussen
4. Alandra -- McGaughey prospect gave a fine account of herself in stakes debut
5. Perfect Alibi -- Grade 1 queen finished well in her route debut at Keeneland
6. Frank’s Rockette -- Hard-trying filly from the Mott barn always fires
