Breeders' Cup: How to play the All-Turf Pick 3 on Friday
Bettors who prefer not to mess with the two dirt juvenile races in multi-race wagers on Friday's Breeders' Cup at Keeneland (which may or may not include having to key heavy favorite Cave Rock) have the option of playing the $3 All-Turf Pick 3. The sequence starts with the Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) and will include the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) and Juvenile Turf (G1).
Here's a look at how we'll be playing the $3 minimum sequence:
Juvenile Turf Sprint -- Race 6 (3 p.m. ET)
With a lot of speed obviously signed on, course-and-distance winner #2 Love Reigns (4-1) looks a serious contender to give trainer Wesley Ward a fourth consecutive win in this race and second in a row with a filly. Although her inside draw is perhaps not the best, she does have early foot and showed last time she can rate and pounce. California invader #11 Speed Boat Beach (6-1) is arguably the best drawn of those likely to flashing zip from the outset.
Juvenile Fillies Turf -- Race 8 (4:20 p.m. ET)
There's no clear-cut favorite in this full field of 14, with #6 Be Your Best (8-1) very much eligible to rebound off a compromised third-place effort in the Miss Grillo (G2). Her first two starts, both wins at Saratoga, were very strong. #11 G Laurie (12-1) didn't get the best of trips when third in the Natalma (G1) at Woodbine and looks a progressive sort for Graham Motion, while Miss Grillo winner #5 Pleasant Passage (12-1) enters unbeaten after two starts and with a versatile running style to boot.
Juvenile Turf -- Race 10 (5:40 p.m. ET)
As we consider the domestic contingent a relatively modest lot, our key in the sequence will be the Godolphin homebred #4 Silver Knott (3-1), who racked up Group 3 wins at Sandown and Newmarket in recent months and who will appreciate footing that's not too testing. He might not be quite up to the level that stablemate Modern Games was a year ago, but might not need to be to win this.
- All-Turf Pick 3 ticket: 2, 11 with 5, 6, 11 with 4 ($18)
