2024 Breeders' Cup: Betting the rolling two-day Doubles

November 1st, 2024

Aside from the Early Pick 5s, bettors looking to get involved in multi-race wagers at this weekend's Breeders' Cup at Del Mar are reminded that those offering the lowest takeout will be the rolling Doubles and the trio of two-day Doubles.

Although the 20% rate is higher than it should be (aren't they all?), they're better priced than the Pick 3s, Pick 4s, other Pick 5s, and Pick 6, which carry a rate of 23.68%.

Of the two-day wagers, arguably the most attractive are those linking the Juvenile (G1) and Classic (G1) as well as the Juvenile Turf (G1) and Turf (G1). That is unless you can cleverly beat odds-on choice Thorpedo Anna in the Distaff (G1), which is linked with Friday's Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Beating one or both post-time favorites is generally the key to Double success. In the Juvenile, that would probably be #7 East Avenue. Although my second selection, I'm willing to fade East Avenue entirely in Doubles as I'll be using the morning-line choice in the Classic.

Doubles linking #10 Chancer McPatrick in the Juvenile with #3 City of Troy and #12 Arthur's Ride in the Classic is one play. I'll also do a couple safer Doubles linking #7 Gaming in the Juvenile with the two Classic runners.

Being inclined to use morning-line favorite #11 Rebel's Romance and #3 Shahryar in Saturday's Turf, I'll fade my second choice in the Juvenile Turf, #11 New Century, and instead include U.S. contenders #5 Zulu Kingdom and #10 Mentee along with top choice #13 Henri Matisse.

In addition to the rolling Double linking the Juvenile and Juvenile Turf, there are a number of rolling Doubles on Saturday's card I'll be looking to invest in, provided I am able to beat favorites in one or both legs.

Among those I'll be using in Doubles are #4 Vahva, #6 Society, and #10 Scylla in the Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), #3 Cinderella's Dream and #10 Moira in the Filly & Mare Turf (G1), #1 Raging Torrent and #10 Mullikin in the Sprint (G1), and #6 Notable Speech in the Mile (G1).
