How to bet the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

November 1st, 2024

The $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) at Del Mar will be contested at 1 3/8 miles this season, and I think that it plays perfectly for the top two betting choices on the morning line.

While I won’t dispute the abundance of talent that is signed on for the affair, I simply expect the race to be a formful one.

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf Wagers

  • $10 exacta box 3,4 ($20)
  • $3 trifecta key 4 with 2,3,7 ($18)
  • 50-cent superfecta 3,4 with 3,4 with 2,7 with ALL ($18)

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf Analysis

#4 War Like Goddess (5-2) has long been one of my favorite horses in training for conditioner Bill Mott. The consistently excellent daughter of English Channel continues to carry her high-level form from season to season, and the seven-year-old had a nice prep for this one when second in the Turf Classic S. (G1) at Aqueduct while facing the boys.

The bay shows a 7-4-2-1 lifetime mark at the trip, and I love the post as she won’t have to give away ground early on, too. She was a fine third behind the superb Loves Only You in the race at Del Mar in 2021 when it looked like she was home free in the stretch, and anything resembling that performance will find her right there in the final yards once again. Junior Alvarado will guide the late-running star.

Belmont Oaks (G1) victress #3 Cinderella’s Dream (4-1), one of two in the field for Charlie Appleby, has impressed me quite a bit from a visual standpoint from her two starts since arriving in the U.S. The once-beaten daughter of Shamradal passes horses with relative ease once she is given her cue, and the move to 1 3/8 miles on this particular lawn should be easily within her scope, in my opinion. And, I feel that it is definitely worth noting that William Buick came in to pilot the filly in both of her prior runs in the U.S., too.

The ultimate wild card in the cast is E. P. Taylor S. (G1) queen #2 Full Count Felicia (12-1), who picks up Irad Ortiz Jr. One of two fantastic mares from the Kevin Attard barn in the field, the daughter of War Front opened up a massive lead at Woodbine in her signature win to date and came home well at the 10-furlong voyage. She has displayed marked improvement since arriving in this barn earlier in the season, and I don’t feel that her last was a fluke. The Kentucky-bred will be clear early on.

Aidan O’Brien’s #7 Content (6-1) performed well in her lone prior run in the U.S. as a juvenile in 2023, and her win in the Yorkshire Oaks (G1) three back is good enough to make her a viable win contender on Saturday. The Galileo filly didn’t love the soft going in her last two outings but will receive more favorable ground at Del Mar. Frankie Dettori will be in the stirrups.
