Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Analysis
I’m not under the impression that Godolphin’s #6 Star of Mystery (10-1) is the most talented runner in the field, but the Kodiac filly has a lot of quality to her and I think that she is a prime contender from off the pace in the fleet field.
Trained by the superb Charlie Appleby, the lass has been very good this season with a 7-3-3-1 line to her credit, led by a facile victory in the Blue Point Sprint S. (G2) at Meydan in January. The stout late runner has run a trio of times in the states in 2024, led by a comfortable win in the Quick Class S. (G3) at Saratoga two prior. She didn’t have a perfect voyage when second at Keeneland last time out, but the dash was an ideal prep for Saturday, in my opinion.
Star of Mystery lands in a field with plenty of early speed and will be taken back in the early going by William Buick prior to putting in her late burst in the lane. She can win with the right setup, but even if she falls short, I really like her chances to make the frame and add value to my plays.
The @godolphin homebred #6 Star of Mystery was unleashed in the stretch and beats the boys to win the G3 Quick Call at Saratoga! 🌟💪

#9 Cogburn (7-5) is the deserving morning-line choice for Steve Asmussen and might be even lower odds at post time. The sensational son of Not This Time is arguably among the top turf sprinters in the world, and he has been exquisite in each of his three tries in 2024 leading up to Saturday. Five-year-old is 6-for-7 on the green in his career and will take the race to his foes from the start with Irad Ortiz Jr. staying in the irons. He’s surely the top domestic contender in the dash.
The trio of European invaders who filled the top three slots in the Nunthorpe S. (G1) at York on Aug. 23 are worth noting as well. Six-time winner #12 Bradsell (7-2) is an obvious inclusion despite drawing widest in the field. Archie Watson pupil is in excellent form currently and will be a major factor under Hollie Doyle.
#1 Believing (12-1) was runner-up in the Nunthorpe while well backed at 7-2 odds, and the daughter of Mehmas will race with blinkers on for the initial time, too. The consistently good four-year-old was a strong third at Longchamp last time out and gets the superb Ryan Moore in the stirrups.
Longshot #4 Starlust (30-1), who finished a close third in the Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita in 2023, was a solid third in the Nunthorpe and will be a factor with something resembling that performance. Ralph Beckett trainee is too generous of a price to ignore with Rossa Ryan retaining the ride.
