Carryover at Golden Gate Fields, Pick 5 seed at Santa Anita

Want to chase a carryover this Sunday? You’ll have at least one opportunity to do so at Golden Gate Fields, where a $1,831 Super High 5 carryover is on the table.

Unlike some tracks, which offer the Super High 5 on a single race each day, Golden Gate offers rolling $1 Super High 5s in every race containing seven or more entries. If no one hits a particular Super High 5, the pool carries over to the next Super High 5 race.

How to bet the Golden Gate Fields Super High 5 carryover

Sunday’s $1,831 pot is up for grabs in Race 2 (post time 3:15 p.m. ET), a $12,500 maiden claimer for newly turned three-year-olds racing one mile on Tapeta. Eight horses have been entered, but from a Brisnet Speed rating perspective, #5 Iowa Hawkeye (9-5) might be a standout.

Trained by Greg James (a 23% winner in maiden claimers), Iowa Hawkeye ran strongly in a $20,000 maiden claimer racing 1 1/16 miles at Golden Gate two starts back. After settling off the pace, the bay gelding rallied nicely to finish second with a solid 68 Brisnet Speed rating. Even better, the performance was flattered when both the winner and the third-place finisher returned to win their next starts.

Iowa Hawkeye subsequently finished fifth in a $20,000 maiden claimer racing one mile over the Golden Gate turf course. Returning to Tapeta and descending to the $12,500 claiming level should make Iowa Hawkeye difficult to beat at a short price.

If we key Iowa Hawkeye on top, then #6 Even Steven (5-2) is a logical choice to emphasize underneath. Third in a $20,000/$18,000 claimer on turf last month, Even Steven has competed twice over Sunday’s track, class level, and distance, finishing second each time.

#2 Will Is Chill (9-2), a sprinter stretching out in distance while dropping in class, has posted respectable Brisnet Speed ratings and can’t be counted out of the mix. The same goes for #3 Wolf Moon Wilson (6-1), third in a five-furlong Tapeta dash two starts back.

Don’t overlook Santa Anita’s $50,000 Pick 5 seed!

While it’s not technically a carryover, Sunday’s 50-cent Late Pick 5 at Santa Anita will be seeded with $50,000, which adds a ton of betting value to the pool.

The sequence gets underway in Race 6 (post time 5:35 p.m. ET), but the best opportunity for a single might come in Race 7, a $40,000 maiden claimer for three-year-old fillies. #2 Head Start (5-2) looks like the one to beat. The daughter of Upstart ran second in her debut against maiden special weight company at Indiana Grand, and then—following a disappointing run on turf—she shipped to Santa Anita and ran fifth in a $50,000 maiden claimer.

The latter effort was noteworthy because Head Start got burned up dueling for the lead through an opening quarter mile in :21.09. If she’s able to set a more relaxed pace while dropping down the class ladder on Sunday, she can sprint to victory as a logical Pick 5 single.
