Carryover watch: Super High 5 prize pools at Churchill Downs, Gulfstream Park
Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson shares horses to play in a pair of Sunday Super High 5 carryovers at Gulfstream Park and Churchill Downs.
Gulfstream Park, Race 1: $1,374 Super High 5 carryover (12:25 p.m. ET)
The opening race on Sunday at Gulfstream Park brings a $1,374 carryover in the $1 Super High 5.
The race in question is a $35,000 maiden claimer for two-year-old fillies racing one mile and 70 yards on Tapeta. There are 11 entries, which means we have 55,440 possible outcomes to ponder.
#6 Action Rose (7-2) feels like a filly to build tickets around. The Antonio Sano trainee has competed exclusively against maiden special weight company at Gulfstream Park. In her last two starts running long over the Tapeta, Action Rose finished sixth and 10th after carving out the pace.
It can be tricky for inexperienced horseplayers to bet on maiden races filled with unraced horses. How is it possible to predict the performances of horses who have never run?@J_Keelerman is here to help ⤵️ https://t.co/9wjSr6vjBK

Dropping into the maiden claiming ranks should help Action Rose sustain her speed for longer—perhaps long enough to reach the winner’s circle. She’s already the field’s second-fastest filly in terms of Brisnet Speed ratings (and the fastest on Tapeta), so we recommend playing Action Rose on top in the Super High 5.
Churchill Downs, Race 10: $6,987 Super High 5 carryover (5:35 p.m. ET)
The Sunday card at Churchill Downs concludes with the $300,000 River City H. (G3), a 1 1/8-mile test in which a $6,987 Super High 5 carryover is up for grabs.
The River City was originally slated to take place on turf and drew an overflow field of 14 entries, but the race was switched to dirt on Sunday morning, triggering seven scratches. Thus, there are only 2,520 possible Super High 5 outcomes to consider.
Only two of the remaining entrants have ever won on dirt, and one of them is #1 Hozier (30-1), who broke his maiden over the Santa Anita main track in February 2021 before going on to finish second in the Rebel (G2) on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Hozier hasn't quite lived up to his early promise, but he enters the River City off a win in a $40,000 allowance optional claimer over the Horseshoe Indianapolis lawn, and during the spring he ran second in the Isaac Murphy Marathon S. over the Churchill dirt.

Most importantly, Hozier has the early speed to secure an uncontested lead in a largely paceless River City field. If he shakes loose up front, Hozier may prove impossible to catch.
Here's how we'll bet the Super High 5:
- $1 Super High 5: 1 with 5 with 2,6,7 with 2,6,7 with 2,6,7,13,14 ($18)
- $1 Super High 5: 1 with 2,6,7 with 5 with 2,6,7 with 2,6,7,13,14 ($18)
Total: $36
Good luck!
