Carryover watch: Turfway's $3,403 Super High 5, Laurel's $5,270 Pick 5
Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson shares horses to play in a pair of non-jackpot Saturday carryovers at Laurel Park and Turfway Park.
Laurel Park, Race 5: $5,270 Pick 5 carryover (1:57 p.m. ET)
Saturday’s 50-cent Late Pick 5 at Laurel Park features a $5,270 carryover.
Looking for a single to build tickets around? Arguably the best opportunity can be found in Race 8, the Maryland Juvenile S. for two-year-olds bred in Maryland. The seven-furlong dirt dash has drawn seven entries and morning line favorite #1 Post Time (1-1) looks tough to beat.
Post Time is unbeaten and pretty much untested in two starts, both at Laurel Park. After rallying strongly to win a maiden special weight by two lengths, Post Time stepped up for a $62,500 allowance optional claimer and promptly defeated non-state-restricted rivals by 6 3/4 lengths.

Post Time raced greenly in his allowance score, but won easily and earned a 95 Brisnet Speed rating in the process. That’s the highest number belonging to any horse in the Maryland Juvenile field, so if Post Time races a bit more professionally in his third start for high-percentage trainer Brittany Russel (a 21% winner at Laurel), he can keep his unbeaten record intact.
Turfway Park, Race 8: $3,403 Super High 5 carryover (4:15 p.m. ET)
After going unsolved for two straight racing days, the $1 Super High 5 at Turfway Park boasts a $3,403 carryover. The prize pool is up for grabs in Race 8, a $40,000 allowance optional claimer taking place over 6 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta.
Horses shipping in from Horseshoe Indianapolis have enjoyed strong success during the first three days of the Turfway Park Holiday Meet, winning nine out of 24 races. Two of the Horseshoe Indianapolis winners were trained by Kim Hammond, who has compiled a terrific 3-2-1-0 record to start the Turfway meet.
These stats point toward Hammond’s three-year-old colt #1 Unpredictable Bay (10-1) as a live longshot on Saturday. The son of Cairo Prince was last seen rallying to finish fourth in a $40,000 allowance optional claimer over the Horseshoe Indianapolis dirt. Three starts back, he ran second over the same track and class level, earning a flashy 92 Brisnet Speed rating.
Unpredictable Bay has never run at Turfway Park, but he’s cracked the trifecta in all three of his starts over synthetic footing and may fire his best shot yet while shipping to Turfway. At 10-1, he’s worth playing on top in the Super High 5.
Good luck!
