Chasing Jan. 23 carryovers at Aqueduct, Turfway Park
Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson shares thoughts on a pair of carryovers up for grabs on Sunday at Aqueduct and Turfway Park.
Aqueduct, Race 4: $44,857 Pick 6 carryover (1:48 p.m. ET)
The largest non-jackpot carryover on the agenda for Sunday is the $44,857 Pick 6 prize pool at Aqueduct. Aqueduct’s $1 Pick 6 can be a tricky wager to hit, but Sunday’s sequence appears more manageable than usual with only 43 horses (averaging 7.2 per race) in the sequence.
The best chance for a single might come in Race 8, the Busanda S. for three-year-old fillies racing 1 1/8 miles. #1 Magic Circle (6-5) handled these conditions just fine in the Demoiselle S. (G2) at Aqueduct last month, carving out the pace before fighting on to finish third by one length. The daughter of Kantharos had previously run second in the Tempted S. and fourth in the Frizette S. (G1) on the New York circuit, with the latter defeat coming at the hands of probable two-year-old filly champion Echo Zulu.
Magic Circle campaigns for hot trainer Rudy Rodriguez (a 22% winner at Aqueduct) and brings a bevy of competitive Brisnet Speed ratings to the table. If she can get out in front from the rail draw in this small field, she may prove impossible to catch at a short price.
Turfway Park, Race 8: $2,797 Super High 5 carryover (4:32 p.m. ET)
Turfway Park’s $1 Super High 5 proved unwinnable on Saturday evening, which means there’s a $2,797 carryover on the table for Sunday’s card.
The prize pool is available in Race 8, a $5,000 starter allowance over six furlongs on Tapeta. The big favorite on the morning line is #9 Beverly Park (4-5), victorious in 10 of his last 12 starts. Conditioned by hot trainer Norman Cash, Beverly Park won a $10,000 starter allowance at Oaklawn three starts back and enters off a confident victory in a $5,000 starter allowance at Charles Town.
Many terms are used to describe the amount of moisture held by dirt, turf, and synthetic racing surfaces...

Beverly Park has tons of pacesetting speed and brings a bevy of 90+ Brisnet Speed ratings to the mix, so he’s clearly the horse to beat if he handles the switch from dirt to Tapeta. His fiercest opposition figures to come from #11 Crocketts Bluff (8-1), the winner of a $5,000 starter allowance sprinting six furlongs at Turfway last month. Crocketts Bluff’s 3-for-4 record over the local track stamps the chestnut gelding as a midrange longshot worth supporting underneath Beverly Park.
Here’s how we’ll bet the Super High 5:
- $1 Super High 5: 9 with 11 with 5,6,7,10 with 5,6,7,10 with 2,5,6,7,8,10,12 ($60)
Good luck!
