Check out these carryovers at Delaware Park and Gulfstream Park

October 2nd, 2021

If the seemingly countless graded stakes taking place on Saturday aren’t enough to satisfy your betting interests, there are also a couple of non-jackpot carryovers worth checking out.

Gulfstream Park, Race 1: $3,878 Super High 5 carryover (12:50 p.m. ET)

Let’s see… nine lightly-raced juveniles squaring off in a $20,000 maiden claimer held over one mile and 70 yards on a brand-new synthetic racing surface. Sounds like a recipe for big payoffs, right?

Gulfstream Park recently installed a Tapeta track, which saw its first racing use on Thursday and Friday. So far, the new track is playing slow and tiring, with late runners appearing to hold an advantage over speed horses.

These conditions figure to place fitness and stamina at a premium in the Saturday opener, which features a $3,878 carryover in the $1 Super High 5. That means #8 Poetic Code (9-2) has to offer some appeal. Sire Honor Code was a champion who won multiple Grade 1 races running long, and his progeny have been following suit with success over extended distances. So far, their average winning distance is 7.3 furlongs, stamping Poetic Code as one of the most stoutly-bred runners in Saturday’s field.

Poetic Code has already run twice against tougher company, most recently coming home seventh in a $35,000 maiden claimer racing 7 1/2 furlongs over the Gulfstream turf course. If Poetic Code handles the switch to synthetic, the drop in class and increase in distance can place him in the hunt for victory. For Super High 5 purposes, we suggest keying Poetic Code on top in search of a big score.

Delaware Park, Race 3: $7,853 Pick 5 carryover (2:15 p.m. ET)

The final month of action at Delaware Park’s 2021 meet kicks off with a $7,853 carryover in the 50-cent Pick 5, which features a modest 15% takeout rate.

The sequence is challenging with plenty of large fields on tap. But it’s possible we can minimize ticket costs by singling #6 National Honor (4-1) in Race 4, an $8,000 claimer held over 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf course.

National Honor has been sharp at Delaware Park this season. His two runs over this turf course have produced a runner-up effort in a $12,500 claimer and a late-charging victory for an $8,000 tag. The latter performance came on Sept. 15, so we know National Honor is currently in strong form for hot trainer Jane Cibelli, a 31% winner this meet.

National Honor brings competitive Brisnet Speed ratings to the table, and his form lines are encouraging compared to morning-line favorite #1 Jammin Jimtown (3-1), who has regressed in recent starts. Unless Jammin Jimtown bounces back with a peak effort, National Honor appears to have this $8,000 claimer measured, making him single-worthy at a solid price.

Good luck!
