Churchill Downs: Betting the $4,971 Super High 5 carryover in the Fern Creek S.
The second “Stars of Tomorrow” card of the Churchill Downs Fall Meet wraps up on Saturday with Race 12, the 6 1/2-furlong Fern Creek S. for juvenile fillies. Horseplayers will be interested to know the afternoon finale boasts a $4,971 carryover in the $1 Super High 5.
Assembling a winning Super High 5 ticket is never easy, though Saturday’s opportunity looks easier than some. Only eight horses have been entered in the Fern Creek, which equates to only 6,720 possible outcomes—a manageable number.
The filly to beat is surely the undefeated #8 Sweet Dani Girl (5-2). A debut winner sprinting six furlongs at Churchill Downs, Sweet Dani Girl recently produced a rally from midfield to win Keeneland’s six-furlong Myrtlewood S. with a sharp 90 Brisnet Speed rating. The chestnut filly has trained nicely since then and should get plenty of pace to chase in the Fern Creek, setting the stage for a third straight victory.
#4 Verylittlecents (7-2), who finished third by less than a length in the Myrtlewood, is another logical contender. But don’t overlook the field’s fastest filly on paper, #6 Marissa’s Lady (3-1). The daughter of juvenile Grade 1 winner Violence capitalized on a fast pace to rally and win her debut sprinting six furlongs at Churchill Downs, earning a flashy 95 Brisnet Speed rating. Trainer William Morey strikes at a 26% rate with last-out maiden winners, so Marissa’s Lady is an obvious choice to rally in tandem with Sweet Dani Girl and secure a spot in the trifecta.
High-percentage trainer Brad Cox will saddle two starters: #1 Golden Sights (10-1) and #2 Matareya (7-2). The latter is bound to be a popular choice while dropping in class and distance off a fifth-place finish in the 1 1/16-mile Alcibiades S. (G1) at Keeneland, where she chased a destructively hot pace. But Golden Sights can’t be dismissed either—she ran second in the Ellis Park Debutante S. during the summer, and recently trounced a seven-furlong maiden special weight at Keeneland by 5 1/2 lengths.
Here’s how we’ll bet the Super High 5:
$1 Super High 5: 8 with 4,6 with 4,6 with 1,2,3,5 with 1,2,3,5 ($24)
$1 Super High 5: 8 with 4,6 with 1,2 with 4,6 with 1,2,3,5 ($12)
Total: $36
Good luck!
