Citizen Bull 29-1 in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1
2025 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 1 closed on Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET, shortly before the running of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Del Mar.
Had betting closed after the Juvenile, you can bet the final odds would have played out a bit differently.
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile is the most lucrative Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifier for two-year-olds, awarding points on a 30-15-9-6-3 basis to the top five finishers. The winner typically earns champion two-year-old male honors and heads into winter as the Kentucky Derby (G1) favorite.
As expected, bettors landed on All Other Colts and Geldings Foaled in 2022 as the overall favorite at odds of 4-5. But the top three individual choices — Champagne (G1) winner Chancer McPatrick (9-1), Breeders’ Futurity (G1) hero East Avenue (11-1), and Iroquois (G3) winner Jonathan’s Way (19-1) — subsequently finished sixth, ninth, and seventh at short prices in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Instead, it was American Pharoah (G1) winner Citizen Bull (29-1) who led from start to finish to defeat Del Mar Futurity (G1) winner Gaming (26-1) in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The two accomplished colts are conditioned by six-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert, and they’ll doubtlessly be shorter prices when 2025 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 2 opens for betting Nov. 28-Dec. 1.
Street Sense (G3) winner Sovereignty (23-1) and the multiple Grade 1-placed Ferocious (25-1) were the others who closed at under 30-1. After Citizen Bull, there was a gap in the odds to an unnamed colt by five-time leading North American sire Into Mischief out of All American Dream, by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Purchased for $3.2 million as a yearling, the beautifully bred youngster closed at 39-1, even though he’s yet to run in a race.
Rounding out the list of 40 betting interests were Uncle Jim (45-1), Getaway Car (54-1), Uncaged (65-1), All Fillies Foaled in 2022 (65-1), Tiztastic (66-1), Sandman (70-1), David of Athens (80-1), Tip Top Thomas (85-1), Render Judgment (87-1), Showcase (88-1), Kalea Bay (90-1), Shin Believe (92-1), Dapper Moon (93-1), Patch Adams (93-1), Authentic Strike (96-1), Rated by Merit (101-1), Built (102-1), Owen Almighty (106-1), Bullard (109-1), Lil Muggs (114-1), Praetor (123-1), Incentive Pay (159-1), Keewaydin (170-1), Mo Plex (191-1), McKinzie Street (204-1), Ecoro Azel (214-1), Dr Ruben M (215-1), Filoso (220-1), Rookie Card (232-1), Touchy (256-1), and Hill Road (276-1).
