Competitive Edge draws off in Pat Day Mile, Race 5, on the 2015 Kentucky Derby program

May 2nd, 2015

Competitive Edge tracked the pacesetting Hillbilly Royalty in Saturday’s Pat Day Mile (G3), the 5TH race on the Kentucky Derby 141 undercard, before taking command rounding the turn and drawing off for an easy victory under jockey John Velazquez.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for Nancy Favreau, Kathy Psoinos and Michael B. Tabor, Competitive Edge ran his record to a perfect four-for-four in Saturday’s one-mile contest, which was renamed this season after being run as the Derby Trial a week before the Kentucky Derby in previous years.

Sent off the 6-5 favorite, the bay sophomore returned $4.60 for stopping the clock in a stakes record 1:34.18, which broke Hall of Famer Ack Ack’s record set in the race back in 1969.

Competitive Edge was making his second start of 2015 in this spot, having captured the Tamarac Stakes on March 27. He romped in his two juvenile starts, including a 5 3/4-length score in the Hopeful S. (G1) at Saratoga last September.
