Dayton Raceway offers two lucrative stakes
While the three-year-old pacing colts had their chance to shine in the Little Brown Jug at the Delaware County Fair and prior to that at Northfield Park for the Milstein Memorial, the older free-for-all pacers and trotters will head to another Ohio track tomorrow evening to clash in a pair of lucrative events.
Friday's 10th race is the $167,000 Dayton Trotting Derby for older trotters and many of the sport's best will be on hand. Hannelore Hanover (Matt Kakaley) has been the dominant aged trotting mare trotting the past two years and this season the Ron Burke trainee has won six of 11 starts and banked nearly $600,000. Hannelore Hanover has already proven her meddle against male trotters, including an earlier victory against them in the $500,000 Maple Leaf Trot final at Mohawk Raceway.
Hannelore Hanover will likely be the solid favorite in the Dayton Derby despite post position seven and the fact that regular driver Yannick Gingras did not make the trip, but several of her rivals will prove formidable. Homicide Hunter (Brett Miller) posted a 6-1 upset in the $240,000 Centaur Stakes at Hoosier Park last week for trainer Chris Oakes, but the Mr Cantab gelding got post eight for this event. J L Cruze (David Miller) was the sport's aged trotting champ two years ago and he drew the rail for this event and the Eric Ell trainee could play a major role. Crazy Wow (Chris Page) got post six for Burke and has ample speed the make his presence known early and late.
Two races later on the card many of the sport's top aged pacers will be on hand for the $140,000 Dayton Pacing Derby where McWicked looms the modest post time choice from post four for trainer Casie Coleman. Two starts back he won the $225,000 Jim Ewart Memorial at Scioto Downs then offered little in the $160,000 Hoosier Park Pacing Derby last week. Burke trainees Rockin Ron (Kakaley) and Check Six (Page) will leave from posts six and eight, respectively, while the well-traveled Dealt A Winner (Aaron Merriman), hero of the Roll With Joe Stakes at Tioga Downs, will have post three.
Speaking of well traveled, Mach It So (Ronnie Wrenn, Jr.), most recently second behind Bit Of A Legend N in the $150,000 Bobby Quillen Memorial at Harrington Raceway, will start from post nine on the far outside for trainer Jeff Bamond, Jr. Mach It So owns a 3-4-4 slate and $480,000 banked from 19 starts this year, including his second victory in the $425,000 William R. Haughton Memorial final at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. He owns a solid 37-19-13 slate and earnings of nearly $2.16 million from 113 career outings and could be poised for a big upset despite his outside post draw.
Among the participants in the Dayton Pacing Derby on Friday, most of them will be headed back to Hoosier Park next month for the Breeders Crown eliminations and final there on Oct. 21 & 28 and several of them could get invited to join Quillen hero Bit Of A Legend N and All Bets Off and six others in the second renewal of the $100,000 Potomac Pace at Rosecroft Raceway on Sunday, November 5. All Bets Off, hero of the Hoosier Park Pacing Derby last weekend, is will likely return to the Maryland five-eighths mile oval to defend his title in the Potomac, having prevailed last fall in 1:48.2 to equal the all-age track record on a night when temperatures dropped into the teens.
