Del Mar: How to bet the $513,150 mandatory-payout Rainbow Pick 6 carryover
Sunday is closing day of the Del Mar meet, and fans of multi-race wagers will be excited to know there’s a $513,150 Rainbow Pick 6 jackpot carryover slated for mandatory payout.
Post time for Race 4, the opening leg, is 5 p.m. ET. Planning to play along? Let’s take a race-by-race look at the sequence and assemble a ticket for around $100:
Race 4: $32,000 Maiden Claiming (six furlongs)
None of the experienced two-year-old fillies in this field has run particularly fast on the Brisnet Speed rating scale, so we have to give a long look to the first-time starters #2 Nobe (6-1), #3 Prestigious (6-1), and #12 Blackened (12-1), all three conditioned by trainers who win at least 10% of the time with debuting runners. We’ll also use #9 Tenacious Lady (4-1), who ships west from Churchill Downs after running third in a $30,000 maiden claimer.
What are mandatory-payout carryovers, and why are they valuable?

Race 5: Cecil B. DeMille (G3, one mile on turf)
Speakeasy S. winner #7 Speed Boat Beach (5-2) has lots of speed and exits the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1), but he’s never run farther than 5 1/2 furlongs. If stretching out over one mile trips him up, then promising maiden winners #2 Ransomware (6-1), #3 First Peace (5-1), and #6 Ze’bul (5-1) will have an opportunity to steal the show.
Race 6: $20,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (six furlongs)
#2 Square Cat (3-1) won a turf sprint over this distance and class level on Nov. 6, earning a sharp 91 Brisnet Speed rating. He was beaten less than one length in his lone dirt run to date, so the surface switch shouldn’t be a major concern. Just in case though, we’ll use #8 Resilient (5-2) as backup.
Race 7: Matriarch (G1, one mile on turf)
Three-time Grade 1 winner #6 Regal Glory (8-5) is the obvious favorite, but she’s lost three straight and failed to fire her strongest shot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) last time out. In a field without much pace on paper, the ultra-speedy #5 Hamwood Flier (5-1) looms as a dangerous alternative.
Closing Day at @DelMarRacing brings with it the Matriarch Stakes (G1)! @TheBrownAndrew and @NTamm1215 dig into the field, their selections, and more!

Race 8: $50,000 Starter Allowance (one mile)
#2 Petruchio (6-1) has been competing on turf of late, but his last dirt start produced a third-place finish in the 2020 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), so switching surfaces may produce a big run. Petruchio has a shot to surprise against #4 Bright Leaf (5-2), who finished second over this track, distance, and class level last time out.
Race 9: $80,000 Allowance Optional Claiming (1 1/16 miles on turf)
A competitive field concludes the Pick 6. We’ll spread deep with #1 Count of Amazonia (6-1), #5 Earls Rock (3-1), #6 Ready Soul (5-1), and #10 Lincoln Hawk (4-1).
- 20-cent Pick 6: 2,3,9,12 with 2,3,6,7 with 2,8 with 5,6 with 2,4 with 1,5,6,10 ($102.40)
Good luck!
