Delta Downs Preview: $634,530 Lee Berwick Futurity

July 9th, 2015

Fans of Quarter Horse racing will be in for a great night Saturday, July 11th when Delta Downs presents its Louisiana Showcase Night.  The Vinton, Louisiana racetrack will salute Louisiana-breds with eight stakes races, highlighted by the $634,530 Lee Berwick Memorial Louisiana-bred Futurity (RG1).

Trials were run three weeks ago for the rich Lee Berwick Futurity with the ten fastest qualifiers returning for the final, which will run as the tenth race on the 11-race card. The fastest qualifier was The Renaissance Man, who covered 350 yards in 17.517 seconds. He is conditioned by top Louisiana trainer, Kenneth L. Roberts, Sr. Several other noteworthy contenders include Fast Ladys Man, who set the second-fastest time in trials and will be ridden by leading Delta Downs jockey, John Hamilton.  Talented filly Jessa Louisiana Zoom captured the $273,977 Louisiana Lassie Futurity on May 15, and is a perfect three for three for trainer Frank Cavazos. She has been installed as the 5-2 morning line choice, despite being the third-fastest qualifier.

Historically, it is interesting to note that the last time the fastest qualifier won the Lee Berwick Futurity was in 2009. Each of the ten finalists have a good chance to take home the trophy; a  good break and clean trip is essential in any Quarter Horse race, and especially in the big money events.

Another stakes worth noting is the $217,640 Delta Downs Derby for 3-year-olds competing at 400 yards. The fastest qualifier for the Derby is Heza Louisiana Dash from the capable barn of Kenneth Roberts, Sr.  He saddled the winner of the 2014 Delta Downs Derby, Kool Design, a 40-1 longshot, who returned $83.80 to win!

Race fans will be treated to a very talented field in the $100,000 Louisiana Classic at 440 yards. Defending champion, Fast Talkin Henry returns and will face multiple stakes winners Open Me a Corona and the 7-year-old Jls Mr Bigtime, who eclipsed the million dollar mark in earnings last December.

Post time for the final night of the Delta Downs Quarter Horse meet is Saturday at 6:15 pm (Central). The card will be full of betting opportunities with an opportunity to watch and wager on some of the best Quarter Horses in the country.

Enjoy and cash plenty of winning tickets!
