Delta Downs Quarter Horse Meet opens Friday, April 21
The Louisiana Quarter Horse circuit shifts to Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel on Friday, April 21.
Racing fans will enjoy 46 days of live racing with a very lucrative stakes schedule, beginning with the $20,000 Delta Dash for 3-year-olds and up at 250 yards on opening night. The $50,000 Open Me a Corona Stakes (RG2) highlights Saturday night’s card and will feature a very competitive field going 350 yards.
Accredited Louisiana-breds, supported by a strong LQHBA breeding program, will compete in trials for the Laddie and Lassie Futurities on Friday, April 28 and 29. The $100,000-added Firecracker Derby for 3-year-olds and the $100,000-added Firecracker Futurity (Gr. 2) for 2-year-olds take center stage take place in the first week of July and the season concludes with a stakes-filled evening on July 8 highlighted by the richest stakes of the meet, the Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1). Last year’s Lee Berwick Futurity winner was Watergirl B, a filly trained by John Stinebaugh and ridden by Gilbert Ortiz. Peaking at just the right time, she upset the field and rewarded her supporters with a win payout of $86!

The battle for leading trainer went down to the final night of the meet with Trainer Kenneth Roberts, Sr. winning one more race than Michael Taylor. Both horsemen will return with full barns with Trey Ellis, Kenneth Weeks, Carlos Saldivar and Orlando Orozco also very capable of winning their share of races.
