Along the Road to the Kentucky Derby, Derby Remix has built a playlist of prep winners, race by race and song by song.
With the field set for the Run for the Roses, it's time for the Derby Remix MegaMix, a playlist of the songs you've heard after 3-year-old preps all year long, as well as one new song for every horse in the field.
1. Finnick the Fierce
The longshot buzz about him has quieted, and the rail draw quells it further. But, as in "Yellow Flicker Beat" by Lorde, that is never enough to make someone on a mission stop trying.
2. Max Player
"Dear Friends" by Queen captures the bittersweet nature of his pre-Derby barn move — the mix of sadness, strangeness, and potential he still has for the future.
3. Enforceable
He is a late runner and an early bloomer, but, as in "It's Not Too Late" by Phil Collins, until trainer Mark Casse knows how his Derby story ends, the colt is not going anywhere.
4. Storm the Court
Grass put him in the best form since his Breeders' Cup triumph. But, as in the chorus of "Hook" by Blues Traveler, "the hook brings you back." His hook is the lure of returning to the biggest stage.
5. Major Fed
"Farther We Go" by Walk Off the Earth is a bit nostalgic but acknowledges, "we're getting smarter the farther and farther we go." Based on his pedigree, stretching Major Fed out looks a smart idea.
6. King Guillermo
Portishead's song "Strangers" paints an abstract picture of someone considering a daunting risk to pursue a great desire. He is a horse who has only run five times, and not since Oaklawn's Arkansas Derby (G1) in May .
7. Money Moves
"Opportunities" by Pet Shop Boys is all about making and executing a clever plan. When you spend $975,000 on a horse, why not make your stakes debut in the Derby?
8. South Bend
Just as in "Home" by Daughtry, South Bend has seen a lot of places. He returns to Churchill Downs, where he broke his maiden and won the Street Sense S. last year.
9. Big News
He is trying to make news as a late, surprise entrant to the Derby. However, as in "Here's the Good News" by Paul Weller, he is going to have to proclaim himself the leading story, since his Blue Grass (G2) was back-page material.
10. Thousand Words
In a gate full of so many newer faces, Thousand Words has, in the words of Dragonforce, been "Through the Fire and Flames." He has been a top prospect, a forgotten horse, and is back as a final Derby prep winner.
11. Necker Island
"Til I Hear It From You" by Gin Blossoms is all about sticking to an idea, as long as the one person that matters says it is OK. He has yet to look like a winner in seven races this year, but those closest to him remain confident.
12. Sole Volante
"Stricken" by Disturbed is a paean to someone unforgettable. Anyone who saw his kick in Tampa Downs' prep races may be stricken by it when constructing exotic wagers.
13. Attachment Rate
"Open Road Song" by Eve 6 captures the joy of going as fast as possible in the clear; from this gate, he hopes to find a place where he can do just that.
14. Winning Impression
Can lightning strike in the same place again, for a Dallas Stewart barn that has twice finished second in the Derby with longshots? "Lightning Strikes Twice" by Saint Etienne is all about the value of believing it still can.
15. Ny Traffic
He hasn't won any of his graded preps, but he hit the board in all of them. His second in the Haskell (G1) was enough to justify him, in the words of Adele, going on "Chasing Pavements."
16. Honor A. P.
Will the stretch out to a 1 1/4 miles bring out the Honor A. P. we've hoped to see all along? According to "Potential Futures" by Duels, we'll never know what life can be without trying difficult tests like this.
17. Tiz the Law
"The Greatest" by Sia hits the right note for a horse who keeps turning out excellent work on the Derby trail but can't rest on his laurels. It's a brag song that acknowledges the ongoing struggle and the demand for stamina.
18. Authentic
Despite lingering stamina questions, trainer Bob Baffert presses on. He knows the Derby as well as anyone, making "Question Everything" by 8stops7 — all about listening to experience — a perfect fit.
