Derby Remix: Top 10 playlist

April 20th, 2020

With a brief lull in the prep calendar, it's a good time to look at the top Kentucky Derby  (G1) prospects — in song, of course!

Tiz the Law

Focused on uncertainty, but he leads his class. Celebrate his achievements with a song that matches his swagger: "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor.

Nadal

He is still lightly raced, but he doesn't need an easy pace. Like Pat Benatar, Nadal dares anyone to "Hit Me with Your Best Shot." Take him seriously.

Honor A. P.

He tried to chase down Authentic in his seasonal debut. His pedigree bodes well for improvement, but like the subject of Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten." his real story is just beginning.

Sole Volante

Trusting a closer in the Derby is hard, but his turn of foot is sharp. Like the protagonist in "Good Enough" by Lifehouse, he has to prove his innate abilities will suffice.

Wells Bayou

It's easy to imagine Wells Bayou cruising toward the Kentucky Derby, trying to outrun the chaos and uncertainty like the characters in "Speed of Light" by Shades Apart.

Silver Prospector

He dazzled in the Southwest (G3), but after the Smarty Jones and the Rebel (G2), he probably knows all the words to Tina Turner's "I Can't Stand the Rain."

Enforceable

He's a blueblood, so the "Rawhide" theme may seem odd. But he will keep rollin', rollin', rollin' late. The bite of the Dead Kennedys' punk cover fits the mood of anyone who discounts him.

Gouverneur Morris

He comes off a wide trip in the Florida Derby (G1), but as Switchfoot proclaims in "Dark Horses," "We've been running up against the crowd. ... We've been down, but we've never been out."

Authentic

He is three-for-three, but will drive alone carry him a mile and a quarter? As Michael Bolton notes in "Go the Distance," his theme from Hercules, it's an uphill slope.

Shotski

He may not be the longest winded or the most talented, but like the hardworking subject of "Hard Hat and a Hammer" by Alan Jackson, he always shows up.
