Race 6 at Gosford (Australia A) is a one-mile handicap for benchmark 64-rated horses. It has a wide spread of weights and that is what makes it attractive to me. The track is expected to be “Soft-7” so any kind of form on it would be a help. He is a versatile gelding that rallied from just off the pace to miss by a length two starts back going seven furlongs over soft turf. Last out, going a mile, he gunned to the front and went gate to wire while carrying 132 pounds. Today, he drops five pounds, draws much better and gets 10 pounds from the highweight. He’s only had 16 career starts at the age of six but four of them came in the last seven weeks and seems to have found a home stretching out to this distance. #6 ONTHETAKE draws the rail again but he has already shown that he has enough speed away from the gate to handle it. He came from just off the pace two starts back to run second going a similar distance as one of the favorites then was a sharp winner as the odds-on favorite last out from this post at this distance. He picks up only three pounds off that win and gets Jason Collett back aboard. Her last two speed ratings have been very good and she has gained experience over soft ground lately. #2 ZOFFANY’S LAD is a one-dimensional closer that won four races in a row last year including over “Soft” and “Heavy” ground. He has had two starts this year going seven furlongs and drops way down in class third start off the layoff. He is 2-for-3 going a mile and will get the right conditions being 1-for-2 on “Soft” turf. With his class edge, he might even be able to handle the five extra pounds he has to carry.
